Yaas Cyclone Speed : Cyclone Yaas Live Updates: Cyclone to weaken gradually in next 3 hours over Jharkhand, says IMD. In coastal districts of Odisha, police teams have intensified the evacuation drive and evacuated & shifted 81,661 people from vulnerable areas to cyclone centres so far. The operation is being expedited and will be finished by the evening: YK Jethwa, ADG (Law & Order).

The cyclone completed its landfall around noon packing strong winds and heavy rainfall along the Odisha coast and neighbouring areas of West Bengal. Other updates include:

  • Cyclone ravages Bengal, Odisha as over 20 lakh evacuated; four dead
  • Rescue operations are underway in Odisha, West Bengal
  • Kolkata, Bhubaneswar airports resume service hours after landfall
  • Landfall process started around 9 am

Track Yaas through these websites

UMANG app

The government's UMANG app has a separate section that offers all IMD department services, including real-time tracking of the cyclone. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play store and search for IMD on the search bar. The carousel on the homepage also offers a warning of the cyclone Yaas and clicking on it will take you to the IMD section. There's an option called cyclone that opens up the ability to track Yaas real-time.

Windy.com offers a real-time view of the cyclone, with its accurate location and severity. There is also a timeline that lets you go ahead in time to see when the cyclone will make landfall and how severe its impact will be. Users can see stats on rain, thunder, wind speed, temperature, and clouds as well.

IMD's Mausam website

This website has been developed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and it offers users to track the cyclone in real-time. On the homepage, there is an option called cyclone, and clicking on it will take you to a bulletin announcing all the upcoming warnings in the country. There is an option in the side menu called Interactive Track of Cyclone. This lets you see where the eye of the cyclone is currently.

RSMC website

The Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for Typical Cyclone Over North Indian Ocean — simply known as RSMC — allows real-time tracking of the cyclone Yaas. It is also developed by India's Ministry of Earth Sciences. Head here to check where the cyclone is at currently.

By May 21, Yaas Cyclone will bring monsoon winds to Andaman sea and that is where it will turn towards Odisha and West Bengal coastal areas. India faces six cyclones each year on average. So, people of the country are not stranger to this situation so they are prepared to even amid this Covid situation. But, these cyclones are known for the disaster they leave behind.

How prepared is Odisha State for Yaas Cyclone

Odisha has already prepared 800 shelters to house citizens from seacoast areas. In an addition to that, schools, government buildings, and colleges are which are not in use will also be used for the shelters if need be. Officials are also going to maintain the social distancing to avoid Covid surge so they are preparing as many shelters as possible.

As a rule-of-thumb, the monsoon makes its onset over Kerala roughly ten days after it makes its advent over the south Andaman Sea. However, due to the interference of cyclonic storms, this theory may not hold true, as was observed last year due to Nisarga and Amphan.

The Cyclone Yaas weather system is likely to hit the eastern or the Coromandel coast of the country on the evening of May 26, the India Meteorological Department said in its tropical cyclone outlook.

Pull Effect Rains to Kerala and Kanyakumari

This cyclone Yaas will not have any direct impact to Tamil Nadu except Kanyakumari will get pull effect rains as it activates the arabian sea monsoon winds from 25th. South TN will get spill over from west and so will some western districts. Heavy Rains – Kerala will also have heavy rains particularly in south Kerala for next 5-6 days from 25th may. Trivandrum, Kollam and Kanyakumari has chance of heavy rains on some days between 25-31st May.

Rise in Temperature for SAP and NTN

Temperature in north TN (Tiruvallur To Thanjavur) and north coastal TN like Chennai, Cuddalore, Pondy, South AP like Nellore will increase to 39-41 (+ or – 1 or 2) for 5-6 days with strong North westerlies.

West Bengal

In West Bengal, the state government has advised all District Magistrates to take urgent measures in view of the approaching cyclone. Further, round the clock control rooms will start functioning in the state from Friday.

At a virtual meeting yesterday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed senior government officials to make arrangements for adequate stock of medicines, drinking water, dry food and tarpaulins.

"All cyclone centres and shelters have been asked to be readied. The district magistrates have been directed to take all precautionary measures in the wake of the warnings," an official said.

"A low-pressure area is very likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east central BOB around 22nd May, 2021. It is very likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 72 hours," said Sunitha Devi, scientist at IMD.

"It is very likely to move northwestwards and reach West Bengal and Odisha coasts around 26th May evening," she added.
