PMKVY Job Roles - Apparel, Made-ups and Home Furnishing (AMHSSC)

"Indian Textile and Clothing (apparel) industry is the second largest manufacturer in the world with an estimated export value of ~ US$ 31 billion and domestic consumption of ~ US$ 58 billion for the year 2011-12. The sector contributes to about 6% of the US$ 1.7 trillion Indian economy. It also provides employment to ~35 million persons directly & ~55 million persons indirectly. India is among the very few countries which have presence across the entire supply chain, from natural and synthetic fibres right up to finished goods manufacturing. It has presence in organised mill sector as well as decentralised sectors like handloom, power loom, silk, etc.

The industry has grown from US $ 57 billion in 2006 at a CAGR of 11.3%. Garments (Apparel) constitute an estimated 68% of the domestic market, followed by technical textiles (24%), and home textiles (7%). In 2011 global trade in textiles and apparel was around US$ 705 billion. This was approximately 4% of the total global trade of all commodities estimated at ~ US$ 15 trillion. During the period 2000 to 2010 the textile and apparel trade has grown at a modest CAGR of 6.4% per annum. Further, the Global Textile and Apparel, or T&A, trade is expected to grow to USD 1 trillion by 2020."




The Government has constituted Prime Minister's National Council on Skill Development for coordinated action for skill development, both in the domain of public and private sector. The National Council on Skill Development mandates skill formation to develop the workforce with enhanced skill through structured programme and assessment. The Apparel, Made-ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council was incorporated on December 24, 2013, as a company i.e. licensed under Sec 25 of the Companies act 1956, with the object to

(a) develop a skills repository for the Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishings value chain,

(b) to build an organization that can develop standards, evaluation criterion and accreditation systems for providing multiple and varied technical skills in the textile sector including employ ability skills to both men and women, as well as challenged persons with regular and direct inputs from industry,

(c) create opportunities for “Training of Trainers ”in both the content and pedagogy for imparting skill training for all workers engaged in the three chosen segments of the textile sector,

(d) quality assurance-develop and promote a standardized, output oriented and quality assured affiliation and accreditation process and demonstrate sustainable business value through it,

(e) focus on continuous improvisation of the training delivery value chain, i.e. training process, training content, trainers, curriculum design, industry endorsement for certification etc.,

(f) partner with training providers and guide them into becoming centre so excellence and innovation by utilizing the standardization in training, evaluation and certification developed by the SSC of the sector.

Job Role: Embroidery Machine Operator Level 4

Role Description: An Embroidery Machine Operator is responsible for operating the embroidery machine to embroider decorative designs on fabric/garments in the apparel industry. The embroidery machine operator is able to perform different kinds of stitches and decorative work such as running shade work, cording & satin stitch, eyelet work, applique work, shade work and round, cut work and open work, pin stitch & pitch stitch, china embroidery & fancy embroidery.


Job Role: Export Assistant

Role Description: An Export Assistant is responsible for managing all the processes in the export department of a company. This includes preparation & management of all shipment related documents, interpret export financing methods and terms of payment, understand foreign trade practices & procedures, handle the Central Excise/Customs Clearance: Regulations, Procedures and Documentation. An export assistant needs to have thorough knowledge of Indian and Foreign trade policies & operations to ensure effective management of the exports business.

Role Description: A Factory Compliance Auditor is responsible for conducting regular audits in the apparel factory to check if the unit is functioning in accordance to the industry regulations, standards and policies, and prepare audit report based on the inspection & findings.

Role Description: To study the market, trend analysis, & develop a collection for the given season with the organization's objectives


Job Role: Finisher

Role Description: This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to perform the task of Finisher. It includes execution of works and tasks leading to production of finished garments and apparel available for subsequent process of packing.


Job Role: Framer-Computerized Embroidery Machine Level 4

Role Description: The Framer of a Computerized Embroidery Machine is responsible for preparation & setup of the embroidery machine for embroidery and carries out hooping & framing operations. The Framer is also responsible for removal of frame and fabric panel once the embroidery has been completed. While the embroidery is done through the computerized embroidery machine, the Framer needs to monitor the progress, and ensure the required quality of embroidery is achieved.


Job Role: Garment Cutter-CAM

Role Description: The Garment cutter should be able to take the fabric from stock, load the fabric and program the CAM to run the particular design. A garment cutter also removes the cut pieces off the conveyer belt and ensures cutting is done as per product requirements.


Job Role: Hand Embroiderer

Role Description: A Hand Embroiderer embroiders decorative designs on fabric & other materials by hand, using needle & thread. The hand embroiderer uses a variety of sewing techniques to create different kinds of embroidery stitches & effects such as Cross stitch, French knot stitch, Bullion knot stitch, Shade work, Applique work, English Smocking etc. The job requires the hand embroiderer to have the skills to stitch a variety of Flat stitches, Loop stitches and Knotted stitches.

Role Description: This unit covers skills and knowledge required to perform the task of various types of hand embroidery like loop stitch, knotted stitch, flat stitch, etc. as per the khaka provided or with one’s own creativity.

Role Description: An In-Line checker is an important job-role associated with Apparel sector. The primary responsibility of a checker is to identify the faults in the fabrics, cut components and garment parts through visual inspection.

Role Description: A Layerman is pre-production job role. The key responsibility of a Layer Man is to inspect the fabric to identify the presence of any basic fabric faults, laying and cutting the fabric as per specified length before the fabric is passed on to the parts cutting stage.
