Agriculture and allied activities accounts for about 15.7 % of country's GDP and is estimated to employ about 124.7 million people as cultivators and 106.8 million as agricultural labour (Census 2001). Besides this Agriculture Industry employs a large number of people in the Organized and the Unorganized sector, the data pertaining to the same is however not available. Based on the assumptions of Food Grain Production and Manpower required to handle the total produced, the same is derived at (0.20 Million) for Organized and (1.95 Million) for Unorganized sector. India has about 161 million hectares of arable land of which 55 million is irrigated. With the increase in population the demand for food and Agri produce is increasing, but the supply is constant due to low agricultural productivity. This is predominantly due to improper Farm Management practices and loss in post-harvest handling. There is a requirement for specific set of skills in the field of Agriculture.
Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) has been setup as Section 25 company under Companies act of Ministry of Company Affairs. ASCI will works towards building the Capacity around the Agriculture Industry and bridge the gap between laboratories to farm. The ASCI is targeting to touch/ upgrade skills of about 56.49 Million of Cultivators, Agricultural Labours and Direct and Indirect labour engaged in Organised and Unorganized Agriculture Industry viz, Farm Inputs, Procurement, Supply Chain, Warehousing / Logistics etc. The Agriculture Skill Council of Indian (ASCI) is being designed to cater to the following customers of the Agriculture Industry:
• Farmers
• Farm & Wage Workers
• Self Employed
• Extension Workers
• Agriculture Extension Executive
Role Description: The person is responsible for working with Research and Development team in agriculture industries (including seed, fertilizer, pesticides, and micro irrigation industries) to satisfy the farmer needs. They understand and market the technology to be transferred to farmers by way of demonstrations and training. They also coordinate and motivate the farmers to adapt to modern methods for good returns.
Role Description: An agriculture extension service provider gives talks, guidance and actual demonstrations on latest technologies related to agriculture. He also works with other experts in agriculture to learn more or even develop new methods that could advance production.
Role Description: To assist his/her immediate community by providing preventive health care, productivity enhancing and basic first aid services to farm animal and poultry

He is basically involved in climbing palms, identification and harvesting of nuts of appropriate age group and advice coconut farmers on coconut cultivation practices including pest and disease management
Role Description: A Gardener who is responsible for tending lawns, trees, shrubs, ground covers. He needs to be aware of the soil and nutrition requirements of plants, pests and diseases & their control and drainage. Gardeners also need to acquire skills in grafting, pruning, weeding and harvesting of flowers, fruits
Role Description: The installer is responsible for Installation of Greenhouse Structure as per the structural Layout & bill of materials prepared by supplier.

He is basically involved in climbing palms, tapping primary Neera from coconut inflorescence, primary Neera processing, handling of fresh Neera and transporting to processing centres. He also advice coconut farmers on primary Neera processing and coconut cultivation practices including pest and disease management.

Role Description: Deciding on the species of shrimp to harvest, procuring the seed from hatcheries, harvesting the shrimp with good feed and selling the harvested shrimp to the market.
