Inventing the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich
Serving a breaded, boneless chicken breast between two buttered buns is a seemingly simple idea–but it was a novelty for its time. Truett Cathy experimented for years at the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, GA when in 1964, he finally arrived at the perfect recipe. On that day, the Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich was born. That capital A is on purpose – it means “grade A top quality”. Truett’s customers told him, “We like it, don’t change it again.” And we haven’t.
A secret recipe, a legion of fans, a variety of imitators and the nation’s largest chicken restaurant chain (based on sales). That’s the story of the Chick-fil-A® Original Chicken Sandwich.
Restauranteur and Chick-fil-A Founder Truett Cathy began experimenting with the recipe in 1961 and spent years perfecting what is still Chick-fil-A’s number one selling entrée. Cathy’s cooking method is still the way it’s done more than five decades later, and his recipe is still a secret.
While we can’t share the secret recipe, we can reveal some fun facts about how the Original Chicken Sandwich is made at each of Chick-fil-A’s more than 2,000 restaurants nationwide.
It is 18th century England, and the fourth Earl of Sandwich John Montagu is hungry. He makes a request for his servants to serve some meat between two slices of bread so he could eat his meal with one hand and carry on with his other activities. It’s a request that sounds simple enough.
But Montagu had no idea his simple request would start a movement around the world — a sandwich movement, that is.
To honor the fourth Earl of Sandwich’s timeless creation, America celebrates National Sandwich Day on Nov. 3, Montagu’s birthday. And at Chick-fil-A, National Sandwich Day never passes without celebrating Founder Truett Cathy and his recipe for the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich that he created years ago – the same recipe restaurants around the country still use today.

You will select “Gift to a friend” on the item you would like to send and follow the prompts to create a link and share with the recipient of your choosing.
Please note only those rewards which have been redeemed using Chick-fil-A One points are currently eligible to gift. Once a link has been created, your points are redeemed, however, the reward will remain in your account until a recipient has received it. You may share this link using the method of your choice. Each reward link may only be used once, and the link will be void after the reward is redeemed or expires. The recipient of the reward may choose to “Add to Rewards” or “Redeem Now”.
