National Technology Day History and Theme

On May 11, 1998, India successfully fired an Operation Shakti missile at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This was the first among the five nuclear tests in Pokhran. The Test was led by late aerospace engineer and President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Later, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee declared India as a nuclear state. This made India the sixth country to join the nuclear club of nations.

Thus, since 1999, May 11 is celebrated as National Technology Day in India. Based on these immense breakthrough achievements by the engineers, scientists and technicians of the country, Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced May 11 as National Technology Day in 1999. The National Technology Day 2021 theme is 'Science and Technology for a sustainable future'. 

On this very day, an Indian made short-range missile Trishul, was successfully test-fired. The achievements on the 11th day of May were truly exceptional and noteworthy, and it made India stand out in the global arena.

National Technology Day: Significance of May 11, 1998, Pokhran II – Nuclear Tests

1. After the successful conduct of 5 nuclear tests, India officially declared itself as a full-fledged nuclear state.

2. These 5 nuclear tests were codenamed as ‘Operation Shakti’. However, the whole operation is also known as Pokhran-II.

3. The nuclear tests were carried out at the Pokhran test range located in Rajasthan, India.

4. These 5 nuclear tests were carried out by the Indian Army in collaboration with scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER).

5. Pokhran-II nuclear tests helped India achieve the capability to build thermonuclear weapons and fission bombs.

6. Successful Pokhran-II nuclear tests gave India the capability to build nuclear bombs with yields up to 200 kilotons.
