YouTube TV Error Code 99 999 | How to Fix

Error code 99,999 (sometimes appearing as 99 999) on YouTube TV is a frustrating playback error that typically points to a Digital Rights Management (DRM) or browser compatibility issue.

It basically means the player is failing to verify that your device is “authorized” to stream the protected content.

Since you’re seeing this today, here is how to resolve it based on the most successful recent fixes:

1. The “Update & Refresh” Fix (Most Common)

This error is frequently triggered by an outdated Widevine CDM (the component that handles protected video).

  • On a Computer: Check if your browser needs an update. In Chrome/Edge, go to Settings > About and let it update to the latest version. After updating, restart the browser entirely.

  • On a Smart TV: Go to your TV’s app store, find the YouTube TV app, and check for an update. If none is available, unplug your TV from the wall for 60 seconds (a “cold boot”) to clear the system cache.

2. Browser-Specific Troubleshooting

If you are watching on a laptop or desktop:

  • Try a different browser: If you’re on Firefox or Safari, try switching to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. These browsers usually have the best native support for YouTube TV’s DRM.

  • Disable Extensions: Ad-blockers or “Video Downloader” extensions are known to trip error 99,999. Try opening YouTube TV in an Incognito/Private window—if it works there, one of your extensions is the culprit.

3. Sony / Android TV Specific Step

If you are using a Sony Smart TV and see this error when trying to open the app:

  • Go to Settings > Setup > Network.

  • Select Refresh Internet Content. This re-syncs the Sony servers with the YouTube TV authentication.

4. “The Preview Works but Full Screen Doesn’t”

A specific version of this bug allows you to see the “mini-previews” on the home screen, but the video fails when you click it. This is almost always a HDCP (cable) issue:

  • If you’re using an HDMI cable to a monitor/TV, try unplugging both ends and plugging them back in, or try a different HDMI port.
