Why is Miami Not in the ACC Championship Game

The Miami Hurricanes are not in the 2024 ACC Championship Game because they finished the regular season with a 6–2 conference record, placing them third in the standings behind SMU (8–0) and Clemson (7–1).

Because the ACC eliminated divisions, only the top two teams with the best conference winning percentages advance to the title game.

Here is the breakdown of exactly what happened:

1. The Critical Losses

Miami controlled their own destiny for most of the season, but two specific conference losses dropped them out of the top two spots:

  • Loss to Georgia Tech (Nov 9): Miami fell 28–23, giving them their first conference loss.

  • Loss to Syracuse (Nov 30): In the final week of the regular season, Miami lost 42–38 to Syracuse. This was the “knockout blow” that mathematically eliminated them from contention.

2. The Final Standings

The race for Charlotte ended with these top three records:

  • 1. SMU Mustangs: 8–0 in ACC play (Undefeated in conference).

  • 2. Clemson Tigers: 7–1 in ACC play (Only loss was to Louisville).

  • 3. Miami Hurricanes: 6–2 in ACC play.

3. The Result

Since SMU and Clemson had superior conference records, they secured the two spots in the ACC Championship Game (scheduled for December 7, 2024).

What’s Next for Miami?

Despite missing the conference title game, Miami finished the regular season 10–2 overall. They are now waiting to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP), or if they will be selected for a major bowl game.

Their playoff fate depends heavily on how the committee views their resume compared to other 2-loss teams (like those in the SEC and Big Ten).
