The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and months begin when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted. Since the Islamic lunar calendar year is 11 to 12 days shorter than the solar year, Muharram migrates throughout the solar years.

Muharram’s tenth day is known as Ashura. Better known as part of Muharram’s mourning, Shi Sun Muslims mourn the tragic events of osteenusayn ibn ibn osteenfamily, and Sunni Muslims practising fasting in Ashura.

Muslims weep for the martyrdom of the Father and his family, honouring their martyrs with prayer and abstinence from happy events. Shiat Muslims eat on the Ashura as little as possible; this is not regarded as fasting, however. Alivis commemorate and mourn the Imams for fast twelve days, every day for one of the Twelve Imams of Shi Tuna Islam, as if a close relative died. Some people (except children, the elderly or sick) don’t eat or drink until afternoon as part of Husayn’s mourning. Moreover, there is an important ziyarate book, the Ziyarat Ashura. In Shi’nism, reading this ziyarat on this day is popular.
