In Google Messages, an OTP stands for a One-Time Password. It is a unique, single-use security code, typically a series of numbers, that you receive via text message.
OTPs are a fundamental part of two-factor authentication (2FA) and are used to verify your identity when you are logging into an account or making a transaction.
OTPs (One-Time Passwords) in Google Messages are temporary security codes sent via SMS, usually for:
Verifying your identity
Logging in to an account
Authorizing a transaction
They’re used by banks, apps, websites, and services that support 2-factor authentication (2FA) or SMS verification.
Key Features of OTPs in Google Messages
Enhanced Security:
- OTPs add a crucial layer of security on top of your standard password. Even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access your account without the OTP, which is sent directly to your phone.
Automatic Deletion:
- To help keep your inbox organized, Google Messages includes a feature that can automatically detect and delete OTP messages after a certain period, usually 24 hours. Since OTPs expire quickly and are useless after a single use, this feature helps declutter your messages and reduces the risk of old codes being accessed.
Smart Suggestions:
- The app can often recognize an OTP within a text message and provide a quick-copy button in the notification or at the top of the message conversation. This makes it faster to enter the code without having to manually type it.
