Tuesday Morning Flash Flood Warning in Westfield, NJ Due to Ongoing Heavy Rain
According to tapinto.net News, the National Weather Service has extended a flash flood warning for Westfield and Union County until 10:30 a.m.
High water on the tracks forced the suspension of Raritan Valley Line trains on Tuesday morning between Westfield and Plainfield. NJ Transit reports that while train service has resumed in both directions, there are delays of up to 60 minutes.
As of 10:56 a.m., Scotch Plains Police reported that Route 22 eastbound was shut down due to flooding at Park Avenue and Bonnie Burn Road westbound. Mountainside police issued an alert at 9:40 a.m. stating that Glenside Road near Robinhood Road was shut down due to a downed tree and electrical wires.
A rapidly developing low pressure system south of Long Island is expected to produce heavy rainfall across the region. Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches with locally higher amounts are possible. Rainfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times, especially during this morning. The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur through early this afternoon. * Heavy rain may produce areas of flash flooding.
Many roads in the Town of Westfield are currently flooded, according to police there, who sent out a Nixle alert shortly after 8 a.m. “If at all possible, stay off of these roads. Do not go into flooded areas in your car or on foot.”
The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for * Portions of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including the following areas, in southern Connecticut, Northern Fairfield, Northern Middlesex, Northern New Haven, Northern New London, Southern Fairfield, Southern Middlesex, Southern New Haven and Southern New London. In northeast New Jersey, Eastern Bergen, Eastern Essex, Eastern Passaic, Eastern Union, Hudson, Western Bergen, Western Essex, Western Passaic and Western Union.
In southeast New York, Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northeast Suffolk, Northern Nassau, Northern Queens, Northern Westchester, Northwest Suffolk, Orange, Putnam, Richmond (Staten Island), Rockland, Southeast Suffolk, Southern Nassau, Southern Queens, Southern Westchester and Southwest Suffolk.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the National Weather Service advised. In vehicles, most flood fatalities occur.
