TopstepX Network Error | Topstep Not Working

If you are seeing a “Network Error” in TopstepX, it is most likely a local connection issue or a browser configuration conflict. Here are the specific steps to resolve this error, ordered from most likely to least likely causes.

1. The “Time Sync” Error (Most Common)

TopstepX has a strict security feature that blocks connections if your computer’s clock does not perfectly match their server time.

  • The Fix: Go to your computer’s Date & Time settings and click “Sync Now” (Windows) or toggle “Set date and time automatically” off and on again (Mac).

  • Why: Even a 30-second discrepancy can trigger a “Network Error” or invalid token message.

2. The “Broker Connection Limit” (TradingView/Tradovate)

If you are trading on TopstepX but have TradingView or Tradovate open in another tab or device, you will get disconnected.

  • The Fix: Log out of all other instances of TradingView and Tradovate. You can only have one active data connection at a time.

  • Tip: If you recently closed a tab, wait 60 seconds before trying to log in again to allow the previous session to fully clear from the server.

3. Browser & Cache Conflicts

TopstepX is web-based and highly sensitive to cached data and extensions.

  • Ad Blockers: Disable uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, or privacy extensions (like Ghostery) for topstepx.com. These often block the websocket connection needed for live data.

  • Clear Cache: Clear your browser’s cookies and cache for “All time.”

  • Try Incognito: Open a private/incognito window. If it works there, one of your extensions is breaking the connection.

4. VPN & Firewall Issues

  • VPN: If you are using a VPN, try disconnecting it. While TopstepX allows VPNs, certain server locations (especially non-US servers) may be blocked or throttled, appearing as a network error.

  • Firewall: Ensure your antivirus is not blocking topstepx.com or the data feed domains.

5. Check “Simulated Environment”

If you are logging in via a Tradovate bridge or external connection:

  • Ensure you have selected “Simulated Environment” (not “Live”) during the login process. Selecting “Live” with a Topstep evaluation account often results in an immediate connection failure.
