Are you arranging to visit Kodaikanal and Ooty? An electronic pass is required so that local governments may track things like the number of cars on the road, the types of vehicles on the road, and the number of summertime visitors to certain hill stations.

A special Division Bench consisting of Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar issued an order on Monday requiring all tourists visiting Kodaikanal and Ooty from May 7 to June 30 to obtain an e-pass.

The Nilgiris and Dindigul Collectorates will be able to issue as many e-passes as they like, according to the Special Division Bench. It should be noted that these passes are not required of residents. It has been directed that the Collectors make the e-pass system widely known.

Along with that, the judges suggested that the two Collectors look into the possibility of incorporating a payment gateway into the e-pass system, with the help of the IT department. Applicants would be allowed to pay tolls online, which would reduce traffic at checkpoints, save gasoline, and cut down on carbon emissions.

Automobiles registered in the area are exempt from the e-pass scheme.

More than 20,000 vehicles travel to hill stations daily, according to a state study, and the government is currently working with specialists from IIT and IIM to determine the maximum number of vehicles that can reach these locations.

Tourists from all over the nation were causing a lot of trouble for the locals in Ooty and Kodaikanal, the bench said, because of the crowds. There were too many tourists on the roadways for them to safely travel for medical situations.

Because of this, the bench noted that there has to be a cap on the amount of tourist cars visiting the hill stations in order to prevent congestion.
