Troubleshooting “Down” Symptoms
If you are currently unable to connect, the issue is likely local or specific to your tailnet configuration. Try these “Quick Fixes”:
-
Check Key Expiry:
-
* By default, Tailscale node keys expire every 180 days.
-
Go to theAdmin Console and check if your specific machine shows “Key Expired.” You can toggle “Disable Key Expiry” for servers that need to stay online indefinitely.
-
-
-
Verify Direct vs. Relay:
-
Run
tailscale statusin your terminal. -
If you see “relay” next to a node instead of “active” or an IP, your traffic is being throttled through a DERP relay because a direct connection (P2P) couldn’t be established (often due to aggressive firewalls).
-
-
Restart the Service:
-
Linux:
sudo systemctl restart tailscaled -
macOS/Windows: Quit the app from the tray/menu bar and relaunch it.
-
-
Check Exit Node Status:
-
If your internet is completely “down” while Tailscale is on, you might be trying to route traffic through an offline Exit Node.
-
Fix: Open the Tailscale menu and select “None” under Exit Nodes to see if connectivity returns.
