Sky Viewing Card Cannot Be Read | How to Fix

A “Sky Viewing Card cannot be read” error is a common problem that can usually be fixed with some simple troubleshooting steps. The issue is often related to the card itself, its connection with the Sky box, or a need for the card to be re-paired with your account.

🛠️ How to Fix “Sky Viewing Card Cannot Be Read”

âś… 1. Reinsert the Viewing Card

This alone fixes the problem most of the time.

  1. Turn off your Sky box at the wall

  2. Wait for 30 seconds

  3. Remove the viewing card (located in the front card slot)

  4. Check for dirt, dust, or damage

    • Wipe the gold chip gently with a dry, lint-free cloth

  5. Reinsert the card fully — chip facing down, as shown on the box

  6. Turn the Sky box back on

Wait a few minutes — the error should disappear. If it doesn’t, try the next steps.

âś… 2. Check That the Card Matches the Box

If you’ve swapped boxes recently, the card might be paired to another Sky box and won’t work.

  • Go to Services > Settings > System Details

  • Check that the Viewing Card Number matches your Sky account

  • If not, you’ll need to pair the card to the box (see below)

âś… 3. Pair the Card to the Box (Re-Pair Online or By Phone)

If the card was replaced, or the box is new, you may need to re-pair:

Online (UK):

  1. Go to: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/pair-your-viewing-card

  2. Log in with your Sky ID

  3. Follow instructions to pair your card with the current box

Or Call Sky:

  • UK Sky Customer Service: 0333 759 3772

  • Tell them you’re getting the “Viewing card cannot be read” message, and ask to pair the card to your box

âś… 4. Check for Updates / Reboot Box

Sometimes a software glitch can trigger this error.

  1. Power off the box at the wall

  2. Wait 1 minute

  3. Turn it back on — allow 5–10 mins to reboot and reload

âś… 5. Test Another Card (If You Have One)

If you have a second Sky box or card, insert it briefly into this box. If it works, your original card may be faulty.

❌ Still Not Working?

If none of the above work, it may be:

  • Damaged viewing card → Sky may need to send you a replacement

  • Faulty card reader in the box → Box may need service or replacement

📞 Call Sky Support and tell them the steps you’ve already tried. They can diagnose remotely and issue a new card or box if needed.
