Navratri 7th Day (Maha Saptami) observes the worship of Goddess Kalaratri as well as Goddess Saraswati. This day people also arrange the Utsava Puja. On the Navratri day 7; Navagraha puja is also performed.

Goddess Kalaratri is considered to be the most ferocious avatar of NavDurga and is known for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the universe.

The Festival is celebrated for nine nights and devotees pray, take part in the Dandiya Raas and Garba and offer prasad to please Goddess Durga.

DAY 7 – ORANGE

The festival begins with the bright and vibrant Orange. This colour signifies energy and happiness. Hindus worship Goddess Devi Kalaratri  on this day.

Day 7: Goddess Kalaratri

Considered the most ferocious form of Goddess Durga, Kalaratri is revered on Saptami. It is believed that Parvati removed her fair skin to kill the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha. The color of the day is White. On Saptami, the Goddess appears in a white color attire with a lot of rage in her fiery eyes, her skin turns black. The white color portrays prayer and peace and ensures the devotees that the Goddess will protect them from harm.

Nav-Durga means Scourer of Darkness; Enemy of Darkness. Kalaratri is the seventh aspect Shakti of Maa Durga worshipped on the 7th day sequence during Durga Navaratri. She is also called Kaalatri Navadurga.

Indeed she is the most violent of Durga manifestations. She appears aggressive. She can curse and bless. Her intensity induces fear. She us believed to be the destroyer of demons, thus symbolizing destruction of evil. Kalaratri means the One who is “the Death of Kaal”. Here Kaal is dedicated as time and death. Kalaratri is the one who destroys avidya, ignorance and removes ru, darkness. This is symbolic of human life having dark side that Mother nature bombards one with violence to create havoc before all ‘dirt’ is removed. Darkness also represents Tamas gunas. So symbolically Kalaratri exhorts a devotee to get rid the tamasic qualities of bad, evil and negative tendencies.

Kalaratri destroys demons, devils, daanava, daitya, asura and also the wicked. It is said that bhota, pretha nad psacha will run upon hearing Kalaratri’s name. She is also the remover of planetary evils. But Mother always appears auspicious in her effect hence she is called Shubhankari, meaning ‘doing good’. As Subhankari, she makes bhaktas fearless. They have no fear from fire, water, wild being or the enemy. They do not the darkness of the night. By revering Goddess Kalarathri in the heart, meditating on her and doing japa-nama, her bhaktas worship single mindedly. He or she observes all Yamas, Niyamas and Samyamas, that is, spiritual rules of ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ .

DAY 1 – WHITE

White is the colour for Day 1, which is a symbol of peace and purity. Hindus worship Goddess Brahmacharini on this day.

DAY 2 – RED

People wear red colour on the third day of Navratri. It signifies beauty and fearlessness. Hindus worship Goddess Chandraghanta on this day.

DAY 3 – ROYAL BLUE

The colour of the third day of Navratri is royal blue. This colour is considered good for health and wealth. Hindus worship Goddess Kushmanda on this day.

DAY 4 – YELLOW

People wear the colour yellow on the fourth day of the festival. The colour stands for happiness and brightness. Hindus worship Goddess Skandamata on Day 1.

DAY 5 – GREEN

This colour of the fifth day signifies new beginnings and growth. Hindus worship Goddess Katyayani on Day 5.

DAY 6 – GREY

The colour of the sixth day is grey, a colour which stands for the strength of transforming. Hindus worship Goddess Kalaratri on Day 6 and this day is called the Tritiya.

DAY 8 – Peacock Green

The eight-day is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri. This form of Goddess Durga has the power to fulfil all the desires of her devotees. The one who worships this form of the Devi gets relief from all the sufferings in life. This day is associated with pink colour which represents hope, self-refinement and social upliftment.

DAY 9 – PINK

Called Ashtami, many people perform Kanjaks on this day. The colour of the day, purple, signifies the power of intellect and peace. People worship Goddess Mahagauri on this day.

The 9-day festival commences on Vijayadashami or Dussehra, which is the tenth day of the festivities. Dussehra as we all know signifies the victory of good over evil. However, the stories vary from region to region. People from the South, East and North-east celebrate this day as the victory of Maa Durga – also known as Durga Puja.
