Script Hook V Error | FATAL: Unknown Game Version

If you are seeing the “FATAL: Unknown Game Version” or “Critical Error” right now (January 27, 2026), it is because Grand Theft Auto V just received a small update today/yesterday (likely the patch fixing Mission Creator/Wanted Levels).

Whenever GTA V updates, Script Hook V breaks immediately.

Here is the current status and your options:

The Problem

  • Your Game Version: Likely v1.0.372X.0 (New update from Jan 26/27).

  • Latest Script Hook V Version: v1.0.3725.0 (Released Jan 2, 2026).

  • The Mismatch: Because your game is newer than the script tool, the tool blocks the game from launching to prevent crashes.

How to Fix It

Option 1: The “Play Now” Fix (Disable Mods)

If you just want to play the game (Story Mode or Online) and don’t mind losing mods temporarily:

  1. Open your GTA V Main Installation Folder.

  2. Delete (or move to a backup folder) these two files:

    • dinput8.dll (This is the ASI Loader).

    • ScriptHookV.dll

  3. Launch the game. It will run normally in “Vanilla” mode.

Option 2: The “Downgrade” Method (Keep Mods)

If you must play with mods right now, you have to revert your game executable to the previous version that Script Hook supports.

  1. Check if you have a backup: If you used a mod manager or manually backed up GTA5.exe and GTAVLauncher.exe before today, restore them.

  2. Download Downgrade Files: Search online (YouTube/Reddit) for “GTA V Downgrade v1.0.3725.0”.

  3. Replace Files: Paste the old .exe files into your game folder, replacing the new ones.

    • Note: You may need to launch the game via PlayGTAV.exe or disconnect the internet to prevent the launcher from auto-updating it again immediately.

Option 3: Wait for the Update

The creator, Alexander Blade, usually updates Script Hook V within 3 to 7 days of a game patch.

  • Check this link daily: http://www.dev-c.com/gtav/scripthookv/

  • Do not download “updated” versions from random YouTube videos; they are often malware. Only trust the official Dev-C site or known community hubs like GTA5-Mods.com.
