Script Hook V Critical Error Fix | Unknown Game Version

It’s a classic headache for GTA V modders. A Script Hook V Critical Error almost always happens because the game has updated, but your Script Hook V files are still on the old version. The “Unknown Game Version” message is the giveaway.

Here is how to get back into Los Santos without the crashes:

1. The Standard Fix: Update Script Hook V

Since GTA V updates frequently (especially with GTA Online patches), you need the latest binaries from Alexander Blade.

  • Step 1: Go to the official AB Software Development site.

  • Step 2: Download the latest ZIP file.

  • Step 3: Open the bin folder in the ZIP and copy ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll.

  • Step 4: Paste them into your GTA V Main Directory (where GTA5.exe is located), replacing the old files.

2. The “Waiting” Phase (If there’s a brand new update)

If Rockstar just released a patch today or yesterday, the developer of Script Hook V might not have updated the tool yet. It usually takes 24 to 72 hours for a new version to drop.

  • Check the version: Look at the error message. If your game version (e.g., v3095) is higher than what Script Hook V supports, you simply have to wait for the download link on the site to update.

3. Alternative: Roll Back Your Game Version

If you don’t want to wait for a Script Hook update, you can revert GTA V to the previous version—but only if you have a backup.

  • Steam/Epic/Rockstar: These platforms force updates. If you use GTAVLauncherBypasser or have a physical backup of the previous GTA5.exe and update.rpf, you can swap them back in to play offline.

4. Common Troubleshooting Tips

Issue Solution
“Failed to find patterns” This means your Script Hook is outdated. Update as shown in Step 1.
Game crashes on startup Check if you have an old dinput8.dll. This is the “ASI Loader”—make sure it’s updated along with the main DLL.
Epic Games Store Users Ensure you are pointing your mods to the correct folder, as Epic uses a different default install path than Steam.

Quick Warning:

Don’t try to go into GTA Online with these files in your folder. You will likely get flagged and banned. Always move ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll out of the folder before hitting the Online button.
