S.S.C. Napoli • Serie A • Empoli F.C. • Victor Osimhen • Nigeria national football team
Victor Osimhen’s accomplishment as the highest-scoring Nigerian in the Italian top division has been acknowledged by Napoli.
After scoring in Napoli’s tense 2-1 away victory at Atalanta last weekend, Osimhen surpassed Simy Nwankwo’s previous record of 31 goals.
With 32 goals, the 23-year-old currently holds the record.
Given the variety of Nigerian strikers that have previously competed in Serie A, it’s an impressive accomplishment.
Former Italian first flight players include Obafemi Martins, Stephen Makinwa, and Obinna Nsofor.
Napoli celebrated their goal on social media.
“With his goal against Atalanta over the weekend, @victorosimhen9 surpassed all other Nigerians in @SerieA EN scoring history! The Serie A leaders tweeted, “ForzaNapoliSempre.”
If Osimhen scores again against Empoli today, he would tie Arkadiusz Milik’s record for most goals in a single season in Serie A.
Milik was the last Napoli player to score goals in five straight games.
The 32 goals that Luciano Spalletti’s team has scored this season are more than any other team in the Italian top division. In the top five European Leagues, only Bayern Munich has scored more goals in the same amount of games (seven times).
13 players have scored goals for Napoli thus far in 2022–23, and 10 others have assisted in at least one goal during the current season.
