When your Roomba shows Error 14 (or on some models “Error 1-4”), it means the vacuum isn’t detecting the dust-bin properly—either the bin is not installed correctly, the contact sensors are dirty/damaged, or the bin itself may be faulty.
Here are the detailed steps to troubleshoot and fix it:
✅ What the error means
According to the official support article, Error 14 on the “900” series means: “Re-install Roomba’s bin, then press CLEAN to restart.”
The problem is described as: “The Roomba’s bin has a bad connection to the robot.”
In simpler terms: the robot cannot detect a properly installed bin.

🛠 How to fix Error 14
Follow these steps in order:
Remove & re-install the dust-bin
Press the bin-release button, remove the bin, wait a few seconds, then reinstall it making sure it clicks into place firmly.
After reinstalling, press the CLEAN button (or restart via the app) to see if the error clears.
Clean the metal contacts
On both the bin and the robot where the bin connects, wipe the metal contact points. Use a clean, slightly damp melamine foam sponge (e.g., a Magic Eraser) or dry cloth.
Ensure they are free of dust, hair, debris, or corrosion.
Check the filter and bin for proper seating
Make sure the bin’s internal filter is correctly installed and that the bin is firmly seated. Misalignment here can prevent the bin sensor from detecting the bin.
Also inspect for damage or cracks in the bin housing or the fan inside (especially on 900 series where the motor may be in the bin) if applicable. Redundant reports indicate bin/motor faults.
Soft reboot / power cycle your Roomba
For many models you can hold the CLEAN button (or a combo of buttons) for ~10 seconds to reboot. For example: 700/800/900 series: hold CLEAN for 10 seconds until you hear a beep.
After rebooting, reinstall the bin and press CLEAN again.
If the error persists
At this stage, the bin or the bin-detection circuitry may be faulty. Many users have seen the issue resolved only after replacing the dust-bin assembly.
Contact the manufacturer’s support (iRobot) for replacement parts or warranty service.
🧼 Preventive tips
Regularly clean the bin, filter, and contact sensors to avoid buildup of dust/hair that may interfere with detection.
Ensure the bin is always clicked in properly after emptying or cleaning.
Avoid letting liquids or wet debris accumulate in the bin area, as moisture can affect sensor operation.
Keep firmware/app updated, as sometimes software issues can affect sensors (though hardware issues are more common for Error 14).
