After having his appendix removed during surgery, Phil Foden will be unable to play for England in their Euro 2024 qualifying match against Ukraine. The Manchester City midfielder reported feeling ill following Saturday’s training session and was forced to leave the camp as a result. This decision reduces the number of outfield players available to Gareth Southgate’s side before their second match in Group C.

As Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, and Reece James withdrew from the group because of injuries, Southgate is planning to give James Maddison his first start for England in their upcoming match against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening. Maddison will be making his debut for his country. Luke Shaw, who received a red card during England’s 2-1 victory over Italy on Thursday night, will not be available for England’s match since he has been suspended.

The 22-year-old player, who had been a consistent member of the starting 11 throughout the World Cup, was aware of the reasons why he was benched, but he had wanted to be featured in the match against Ukraine. On the other hand, another unfortunate event transpired on Saturday. After going to get checked out, it was determined that Foden was suffering from appendicitis.

About how long it will take Foden to recover, there has been no definitive information. His absence will be a setback for City as they continue their pursuit of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings and prepare for their Champions League quarterfinal match against Bayern Munich the following month. His absence will also be a blow for Pep Guardiola’s team. It seems quite doubtful that Foden will play any role in Saturday’s game against Liverpool.
