When you first set up Google Pay, you’ll be asked to add a bank account so that you can send and receive money.

Prerequisites to add a bank account

  1. Make sure that your bank works with UPI. If it doesn’t, your bank account won’t work with Google Pay.
  2. Make sure that you have outgoing SMS services turned on. Some prepaid recharge packs do not have outgoing SMS enabled, so you may need to get in touch with your operator.
    Tip: Try to send an outgoing SMS to a friend or family to find if this works.
  3. Make sure you have a debit card for the bank account that you want to add.
  4. Make sure to use the same phone number that you’ve registered with your bank account.

How to add a bank account on Google Pay

Important: To prevent errors, make sure that you complete your bank registration on the Google Pay app.

  1. Open Google Pay .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile pictureBank account.
  3. Tap Add bank account.
  4. Choose your bank from the list. If you don’t find your bank, it doesn’t work with Google Pay.
    Tip: You might need to give Google Pay permission to send a verification SMS to your bank. Standard SMS charges apply.
  5. From the list of accounts that appear, select the account that you want to add.
  6. To verify your account, you’ll need to add your debit card details.

GPay India > Add a bank account > Debit card details

  1.  To create a UPI PIN, follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you have an existing UPI PIN: You’ll be asked to enter it.
    • If you don’t remember your PIN: Tap Forgot PIN and follow the instructions.

How to change or remove a bank account on Google Pay

Tip: To update a bank account, remove it and add a bank account.

  1. Open Google Pay .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture and then Bank account.
  3. Tap on the account that you want to delete.
  4. Tap More More and then Remove account.

Decide where to receive money

When someone sends you money, it goes into your primary account.

  1. Open Google Pay .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture and then Bank account.
  3. Tap on the account that you want to update.
  4. At the bottom of the page, tap Set as primary account.

Add cards to Google Pay

  1. On your mobile device, open Google Pay .
  2. Tap on your Profile Picture  and then Bank Accounts and Cards and then Add card.
  3. Enter the card number, expiry date, CVV, and the cardholder’s name and billing address.
  4. Tap Save.
    1. Accept issuer Terms & conditions
    2. We will contact your bank to verify your card
    3. Choose how you will verify
    4. You will be asked for additional authentication via OTP
    5. OTP will be auto read or you can enter manually
  5. Next to your new card’s payment method listing, tap Activate.
  6. Enter your one-time password.

    Important: You should receive this password via text message to the phone number associated to your Google Pay account. If you don’t receive a one-time password, verify that your contact information is correct. If your contact information is up-to-date, contact your bank to troubleshoot.

  7. Enter your one-time password. You will see a confirmation. If you do not see a confirmation, double check your card information and try again.

After your card is verified, you’re ready to use it for transactions.

Note: Adding your card to Google Pay will register your card for Tokenized card payments for all the below use cases:

  1. Tap & Pay at NFC enabled terminals
  2. QR code based payments at merchants
  3. Mobile Recharges on Google Pay and Online payments on 3rd party merchants where Google Pay is supported

In case you don’t want to register your card for any of the use cases listed above you can always call your bank to opt-out/deregister a particular use case for you before adding the card.

You can also call your issuer to de-register your card on a per use case basis post card  addition

Remove cards from Google Pay

  1. On your mobile device, open Google Pay .
  2. Tap Settings and then Payment methods.
  3. Tap the card you want to remove and then Remove card.

Note: Removing your Card from Google Pay will automatically disable all forms of tokenized card payments for you.

Can I choose how many SMS are being sent?

The process of sending an SMS to register your attempt to add a bank account happens in the background. This will help increase the success rate of adding your bank account to Google Pay. You cannot currently choose how many SMS are being sent.
