If you’re interested in applying for the new PAN Card with a QR code, sometimes referred to as PAN 2.0, then here’s a breakdown of the process and some important things to keep in mind:

What is PAN 2.0?

PAN 2.0 is an initiative by the Income Tax Department of India to issue new e-PAN cards with enhanced security features, including a QR code. This QR code contains key information from the PAN database, allowing for quicker verification and reduced chances of fraud.

Do I need to apply?

  • If you have an existing PAN card: You are not required to apply for a new one. Your existing PAN remains valid. However, getting a PAN card with a QR code offers better security and easier verification.
  • If you are a new applicant: You will automatically receive a PAN card with a QR code when you apply.

How to apply for a new PAN card (with QR code) online:

  1. Identify the issuer of your current PAN: Check the back of your existing PAN card to see if it was issued by NSDL (National Securities Depository Ltd) or UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Ltd). This will determine which website you need to use.

  2. Apply through the respective portal:

    • NSDL:

      • Go to the NSDL e-PAN portal: https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/requestAndDownloadEPAN.html
      • Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number (for individuals), and date of birth.
      • Verify your information and choose how to receive an OTP (One-Time Password).
      • Enter the OTP to proceed.
      • If eligible, you can get the e-PAN for free (up to three requests within 30 days of PAN issuance). Otherwise, a nominal fee applies.
      • Make the payment (if required) and your e-PAN will be sent to your registered email ID.
    • UTIITSL:

      • Go to the UTIITSL e-PAN portal: https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN_ONLINE/ePANCard
      • Enter your PAN, date of birth, and captcha code.
      • Verify if your email ID is registered. If not, you might need to update it.
      • Request the e-PAN (may be free or require a nominal fee).
      • Your e-PAN will be sent to your registered email ID.

Important points to remember:

  • Keep your details updated: Ensure your email ID and other information are correct in the Income Tax database.
  • Check email regularly: The e-PAN is usually delivered within 30 minutes to your registered email ID.
  • Fees: The e-PAN might be free if you’ve recently received your PAN or within a certain timeframe. Otherwise, a small fee applies.
  • Document requirements: If you’re a new applicant, you’ll need to provide proof of identity, address, and date of birth.
