Nexus Mods 503 Error | Current Status

As of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Nexus Mods is currently experiencing intermittent 503 Service Unavailable errors.

While the site isn’t fully “down,” multiple status monitors have flagged a Warning over the last few hours due to partial outages affecting the website and the API.

## Current Status

  • Website: Degraded Performance. Users are reporting slow page loads and 503 errors when trying to browse mod pages.

  • API (Vortex/MO2): Unstable. If you are using a mod manager, you may see “Request timed out” or “Failed to fetch” errors.

  • Downloads: Generally working, though the “Manual Download” page may throw a 503 before the file starts.

## What the 503 Error Means

A 503 error is a “Service Unavailable” message. In Nexus’s case, it usually means:

  1. Server Overload: Too many people are trying to access the site at once (common during major game updates or “Spring Break” periods).

  2. CDN Issues: The Content Delivery Network (Cloudflare) is struggling to connect your request to the Nexus origin server.

  3. Maintenance: Brief, unannounced background updates to the database.

## How to Bypass the Error

Since this is a server-side issue, there isn’t a “fix” for your PC, but these tricks can help you get your mods:

  • The “Wait and Refresh” Method: 503 errors are often temporary. If a page fails, wait 30 seconds and refresh. It will usually load on the second or third try.

  • Use the Search Bar Directly: Sometimes the “Browse” pages (like New Today) are the most heavily cached and prone to errors. Using the direct search bar can occasionally bypass the congested nodes.

  • Switch VPN Locations: If you are using a VPN, try switching to a UK or US-East server. These regions often have the most robust connections to the Nexus backbone.

  • Off-Peak Modding: Traffic usually peaks between 4 PM and 9 PM GMT. If you have a massive modlist to download, trying again in a few hours will likely be much smoother.

## Troubleshooting Your Mod Manager

If Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 is failing:

  1. Log out and back in: This forces a fresh API handshake.

  2. Manual Download: If the “Mod Manager Download” button gives a 503, use the Manual Download button and then drag the file into your manager.
