Here’s an update on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the state of New York — what’s happening now, and what to watch out for:
✅ What’s normal / continuing
Eligible households in New York State can continue to apply for SNAP benefits.
All ongoing SNAP recipients will receive their regular October 2025 benefits as scheduled.
The program is still operating: applications, recertifications, and benefit card usage are functioning.
⚠️ What’s uncertain / may change in November
Because of the federal government shutdown, the federal funding that pays SNAP benefits may not be available to issue November 2025 benefits. The state agency warns: “November SNAP benefits may be delayed.”
The state agency (New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, OTDA) says they do not know when November benefits might be issued — it depends on when federal funds are approved.
The maximum benefit levels for households changed as of October 1, 2025. For example: 1-person household max = $298, 2-people = $546, 3-people = $785, 4-people = $994.

🧭 What this means for you (or someone you know in New York)
If you are a SNAP recipient: Check your EBT balance and regularly monitor the official OTDA website / your state app for updates regarding November.
Continue to meet all requirements: recertifications, submitting changes, etc — so your benefits are ready to resume once funding is in place.
Because of the potential delay, think ahead: identify local food assistance resources (food banks, pantries) in your area just in case.
If you are not yet on SNAP but eligible: apply now. Even if benefits are delayed, once funding resumes you may receive benefits retroactively (depending on the rules).
🔍 Bottom line
In New York: October 2025 SNAP benefits are covered and being issued normally. However, November 2025 benefits are at risk of being delayed or withheld until federal funding is restored. The state has cautioned households about this possibility.
