This is a small hotfix aimed at a specific controller bug.

  • Fixed Controller Disconnect Issue: ADDRESSED a bug where disconnecting and reconnecting a controller caused the game to stop progressing normally.

    • Note: This issue specifically caused Time Trial ghost data to be deleted without warning when viewing rankings.

Custom Items

The “Custom Items” feature added in Update 1.4.0 is a game-changer for setting up your own matches in Mario Kart World. It essentially gives you the “Item Switch” functionality that was popular in Super Smash Bros., allowing you to curate the chaos level of your races.

Here is exactly how it works and how to set it up:

How to Enable Custom Items

You can find this option when setting up rules for VS Race, Balloon Battle, Coin Runners, or an Online/Wireless Play Room.

  1. Go to the Rules or Race Settings menu.

  2. Scroll down to the Items option.

  3. Previously, you could only select presets like “Normal,” “Frantic,” or “Shells Only.” Now, you will see a new option: “Custom Items.”

  4. Selecting this opens a sub-menu where you can toggle ON or OFF every single item in the game individually.

What You Can Do With It

This isn’t just about turning off the annoyance of the Blue (Spiny) Shell (though you can definitely do that!). Here are some popular ways players are using it:

  • Skill-Based Racing: Turn off all “luck” items (Bullet Bills, Blue Shells, Lightning) and leave only Mushrooms, Bananas, and Green Shells for a pure driving contest.

  • Total Chaos: Turn off everything except Blue Shells and Bob-ombs.

  • New Item Testing: Since Mario Kart World introduced the Coin Shell (which steals coins from rivals), you can set a match with only Coin Shells to play a pseudo-Coin Runners match on a regular race track.

  • Team Strategies: In Online Rooms, you can disable items that friendly-fire too easily if you are practicing team tactics.

Important Mechanics to Know

  • Probability Changes: When you use Custom Items, the game’s standard “distance-based” item logic changes. If you only enable powerful items (like Stars and Bullet Bills), even the player in 1st place can receive them, which usually never happens in Normal play.

  • Ghost Data: Custom Items are not available in Time Trials or ranked Competitive modes to strictly preserve leaderboard integrity.

Recommended “House Rule” to try:

Try a “Mushroom Only” race on the newly updated Koopa Troopa Beach. Since that track now requires 2 laps (as of the 1.4.0 update) and has many off-road shortcuts, a pure Mushroom race makes for incredibly intense shortcut battles.
