Grants for college can be need-based or merit-based.

• Many grants for college are need-based. Need-based grants are awarded based on your family’s economic situation. To figure out your financial need, most schools consider your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Your EFC is a number used by your school to calculate how much financial aid you are eligible to receive.

• There are merit-based college grants, too. Merit-based grants are awarded to students who demonstrate high levels of academic achievement, a commitment to community service, or excellent leadership skills. To find merit-based grants for college, start by doing an online search for college grants in your home state.

The JuJu Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of youth initiatives and lifting the spirits of those in need. The Foundation was established in 2019 by Pittsburgh Steelers and former University of Southern California Wide Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster

6. The Gates Scholarship

The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to 300 of these student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential.

BASIC ELIGIBILITY

To apply, students must be:

• A high school senior
• From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
• Pell-eligible
• A US citizen, national, or permanent resident
• In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

7. The Hagan Scholarship

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship designed to help rural students graduate college debt-free. The scholarship provides up to $48,000 over four years to attend college and other benefits. Recipients must graduate from one of over 6,300 eligible public high schools. Hagan Scholars from 43 states currently attend 378 colleges and universities. The award of a Hagan Scholarship has been life changing for many recipients. Over six hundred more scholarships can be awarded in April 2022.

The Hagan Scholarship will help pay the unmet financial need of the recipient, up to $6,000 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters.

1. The disbursement amount for each semester will be determined by HSF by taking the Total Cost of Attendance for one academic year, including room and board; then deducting the total dollar amount of ALL scholarships, awards, grants, waivers and recipient’s EFC; then dividing by two. Parents are not required to pay the EFC, the EFC is used only to determine the disbursement amount.
2. The award amount will be adjusted each subsequent academic year to offset the expiration or loss of other scholarships, awards, grants, waivers and changes in the recipient’s EFC.
3. During the fall semester of the second year of college a $15,000 Schwab Brokerage Account will be established for each scholarship recipient to manage for the ensuing 2.5 years in order to learn how to invest to attain financial security.
4. During the fall semester of the third year of college each recipient achieving a 3.50 CGPA will be eligible for an all-expense paid Study and Travel Abroad Award, up to $8,000.
5. During the fall semester of the fourth year of college after establishing a personal Schwab Brokerage Account each recipient will receive $2,000 to be used to start investing to attain financial security.
6. Each scholarship is renewable for up to seven additional semesters if the recipient fulfills the renewal criteria, attends the mandatory workshops, and fulfills their Schwab Account responsibilities.
7. There is no limit to the number of credit hours a recipient can earn during the term of their scholarship. Recipients graduating college in less than four years can use the remainder of their Hagan Scholarship to attend graduate school or a professional school.
8. Second and Fourth-Year Recipients must attend a free mandatory workshop prior to the start of the academic year of college; travel and lodging costs are paid by HSF.
9. Each recipient must contribute toward the cost of their education by working 240 hours during the twelve months prior to the start of each academic year of college and provide proof of employment.

8.Ron Brown Scholarship Program

The Ron Brown Scholarship honors the legacy of Ronald H. Brown through a selective scholarship program that advances higher education for community-minded and intellectually gifted African Americans.

RBSP competitively awards 45 – 50 four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship – the four pillars of the late Ronald H. Brown’s mission to uplift people of all races, cultures and ethnicities – especially our disadvantaged youth.

Applicants for the Ron Brown Scholarship MUST be Black/African American, US citizens or permanent residents, and a current high school senior at the time of their application. Applicants should demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership ability, participate in community service activities and have a demonstrated financial need.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be a graduating high school senior planning to attend a four-year accredited academic institution
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a legal resident of Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New York, or North Carolina.
• Have a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above
• Demonstrate financial need (annual household income no greater than $70,000)
• Possess excellent leadership skills, an ability to persevere through difficult circumstances, and a strong interest in and commitment to their community

10.Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

The maximum grant available from the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund is $15,000 per year . Grants are disbursed to cover each separate semester, quarter or term during which the grantee is attending school. Grants must be used in the year they are awarded and cannot be deferred or carried over.

ELIGIBILITY

The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund aids people active in movements for social and economic justice. These need-based scholarships are awarded to students who are able to do academic work at the college or university level or are enrolled in a trade or technical program and who are active in the progressive movement. Early recipients worked for civil rights, against McCarthyism and for peace in Vietnam.

Recent grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international anti-imperialist solidarity. Applicants must have participated in activities in the US, and there is a strong preference for applicants who plan on working in this country.
