As the first day follows the new moon following the Spring Equinox, those who speak Telugu, Kannada, or Marathi celebrate the New Year. The Telugu people name it Ugadi, the Kannadigas call it Yugadi, and the Marathi people call it Gudi Padwa.
Ugadi is a scientifically-based festival as well. This festival marks the passage of the sun beyond the celestial equator, which occurs on the first day after the first new moon day, also known as Amavasya, after the Spring Equinox.
On March 20th, the Spring Equinox occurs annually, and the first day of the first new moon following March 20th is when Ugadi is celebrated.
