Here are the eligibility details for the one-time “inflation refund check” from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NY) under the FY 2026 NY budget:


✅ Eligibility

You are eligible if all the following apply:

  • You filed a 2023 NY resident income tax return (Form IT-201).

  • You were a full-year NY resident in 2023 (part-year residents don’t qualify).

  • You were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.

  • Your 2023 NY Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) falls within the applicable threshold for your filing status.

🕒 When & How

  • You do not need to apply — if eligible, the check will be mailed automatically by the state.

  • The mailing of checks started end of September 2025 and will continue through October/November.

  • The check will be mailed to the most current address the Tax Department has on file (often the address on your most recent tax return).


⚠️ Additional Notes

  • If you did not file a 2023 resident return (IT-201), you are not eligible.

  • The refund will not be automatically deposited even if your tax refund was deposited; it’s a mailed check

  • The check amount may be taxable (for federal tax purposes) — you should check the details when filing your federal return.

  • Beware of scams: the Tax Department will not ask you to provide bank details or additional personal information to get this check.
