How To Change SASSA Child Grant to Bank Account Online

Unfortunately, you can’t change your SASSA child grant payment method to a bank account online. While SASSA offers online services for some things, changing your banking details is not one of them. You will need to visit a SASSA office in person.

Here’s what you need to do to change your SASSA child grant payment method to a bank account:

1. Gather the required documents:

  • Your South African ID book or smart card.
  • Proof of your new bank account: This can be a bank statement stamped by the bank, no older than three months.
  • Proof of address: A utility bill or any other document that confirms your address, not older than three months.
  • Your SASSA card: If you’re currently receiving your grant on a SASSA card, bring it with you.

2. Visit a SASSA office:

  • Find your nearest SASSA office. You can use the SASSA office locator on their website or call their helpline for assistance.

3. Complete the SASSA bank change form:

  • At the SASSA office, you’ll be given a form to change your banking details. Fill it out accurately with your current and new bank account information.

4. Submit the form and documents:

  • Hand in the completed form along with all the required documents to the SASSA officer.

5. Wait for processing:

  • It may take some time for the changes to be processed. SASSA will usually update your payment method within a month or two.

What’s the child support grant?

The child support grant is aimed at lower-income households to assist parents with the costs of the basic needs of their child. The grant isn’t meant to replace other income but intended to bridge the gap in the cost of living.

Who can apply for the grant?

If you’re the primary caregiver of a child (a parent, grandparent or anyone who’s mainly responsible to look after the child) you’ll need the following to qualify for a grant:

  • Be a South African citizen or have permanent residency.
  • Not earn more than R61 200 a year (R5 100 a month) if you’re single. If you’re married, your combined income shouldn’t be above R122 400 a year (R10 200 a month).

If you’re not the parent, then you’ll have to provide proof that you’re the child’s primary caregiver. You can use an affidavit from a police official or the biological parent, a report from a social worker or a letter from the principal of the child’s school.

For the child to qualify they must:

  • be under 18 years old,
  • not be in the care of a state institution,
  • live with the primary caregiver, who isn’t paid to look after the child.

You and the child must live in South Africa. You can’t get the grant for more than 6 children who aren’t your legally adopted or biological children.

You’re unable to get a grant if you’re:

  • being paid to look after the child,
  • not the child’s primary caregiver,
  • someone is already getting a grant for the child,
  • you represent an institution that takes care of the child.

Only people whose financial situation is below a certain level can get the grant. The test to decide whether you qualify is called a means test.

Important notes:

  • Make sure the bank account you provide is in your name.
  • You can also change your payment method to a different option, such as a cash payout at a designated pay point.
  • If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact SASSA directly.
