HBO Max App Keeps Crashing : Troubleshoot HBO Max on a Phone or Tablet

You can sign up using the HBO Max app on Amazon, Android, Apple, and Roku streaming devices as well as Samsung TVs. You can also sign up at HBOMax.com.

Things to Know

  • Before you sign up, you might already have access to HBO Max.
  • Former HBO NOW subscribers can sign in to HBO Max on supported devices using their HBO NOW email and password. If your subscription has expired you’ll need to start a new subscription.

Sign up

  1. Download the HBO Max app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Open HBO Max and then tap the Profile icon.
  3. Returning subscribers: Choose Sign in to your account. Enter your email and password and then choose Sign In.
  4. Select Choose a Plan.
  5. Choose the subscription plan that you’d like: Ad-Free or With Ads and either monthly or yearly billing. To learn about subscription plans, see HBO Max plans.
  6. Choose Select Plan.
  7. New subscribers: Fill out the account form and choose Create Account. You’ll sign in using this email and password.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to subscribe through Google Play. Your subscription will auto-renew on a recurring basis at the then-current subscription rate (plus applicable taxes) until you cancel it.

If the HBO Max app isn’t working as expected:

Update your software

Update HBO Max

  • Android: Open the Play Store on your Android device and search for HBO Max. If an app update is available tap Update.
  • iOS: Open the App Store on your iOS device and search for HBO Max. If an app update is available tap Update.

Update your device software

  • Android: Open Settings, then tap System > System Update.
  • iOS: Open Settings, then tap General > Software Update.

Once updated, try streaming again.

Test your connection speed

  • Android: Download an Internet speed test app from the Google Play Store and test your connection speed.
  • iOS: Download an Internet speed test app from the Apple App Store and test your connection speed.

You need a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps. If videos are buffering, see HBO Max buffers or pauses.

Cellular connection? If you’re using a cellular data connection, try connecting to a wireless network to see if the problem still happens.

Sign out and restart your device

  1. Sign out of HBO Max. To do this, tap your profile (upper right), the Settings icon, and then scroll down and tap Sign Out.
  2. Hold down the power button until you’re prompted to power off your device (turn the device off, instead of putting it in sleep mode).
  3. Wait 10 seconds and then turn your device back on.
  4. Open HBO Max, sign in, and then try streaming again.

Android or Amazon Fire: Clear cache and data

On your Android phone or tablet, do the following:

  1. Go to Settings on your Android device.
  2. Tap Search and type HBO Max.
  3. Choose HBO Max from the search results.
  4. Tap Storage & cache or Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Open HBO Max, sign in, and then try streaming again.

On your Amazon Fire tablet, do the following:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications.
  2. Choose HBO Max from the list of apps.
  3. Tap Force Stop.
  4. Tap Clear Cache.
  5. Tap Clear Data.
  6. Open HBO Max, sign in, and then try streaming again.

Delete and reinstall HBO Max

Delete the HBO Max app from your phone or tablet and install it again from the app store. Then open HBO Max, sign in, and try streaming again.

‘Content Not Available’ message

If you’re getting a ‘Content Not Available’ error message when you try to watch something, try the following steps:

Step 1: Play a different show or movie

Try playing a different show or movie on the same device.

If you get the same error, choose the device you’re using below and try the troubleshooting steps:

  • Phone or tablet
  • Computer
  • TV device

Otherwise, try the next step.

Step 2: Try another device

Try playing the show or movie that won’t play on another supported device.
