Happy Thanksgiving 2021: Google Doodle Celebrates ThanksGiving 2021 with an Animated Doodle

Thanksgiving is a time when both Canadian and American families come together to celebrate the harvest, share food, and express gratitude. What is the origin of this festival, and how is it observed in the modern world?

History

Thanksgiving brings together the customs of many different cultures. People from Europe who travelled to the United States and Canada carried a variety of religious traditions with them.

Several Thanksgivings have been claimed as the first. Celebrations held by the pilgrims after their passage across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower ship are the most well-known. Many organisations conducted days of prayer, fasting, or feasting in gratitude for completing the long boat journey, just like the pilgrims.

Later, Europeans and their Native American neighbours held feasts to commemorate their new land’s successful crop. The Canadian and American Thanksgiving celebrations have evolved over time, culminating in the contemporary event.

Thanksgiving today

On the second Monday of October, Canada celebrates Thanksgiving. On the fourth Thursday of November, it is observed in the United States. It was once a religious festival, but it has evolved into a primarily secular one. Thanksgiving is a time for many Americans and Canadians to gather with loved ones and enjoy a big meal. Gratitude for the past year can be shown by spending time with family and friends. Many families have a practise of having everyone at the table share what they are most thankful for at the dinner table.

Thanksgiving food

Food is an important part of Thanksgiving. Roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and apple, pumpkin, or pecan pies are all classic Thanksgiving fare. It’s not uncommon for families to have their own unique recipes that have been passed down through the years. When it comes to the holiday, turkeys are unofficially mascots, with a roast bird on the menu and turkey-themed decor. The presenting of turkeys to the president in the United States has evolved in recent years into a hilarious “pardoning” of the bird. There are usually one or two turkeys spared from the Thanksgiving dinner table during this lighthearted ceremony.
