Halifax Activate Credit Card : Activating your new Halifax Credit Card

Activating your new Halifax Credit Card is quick, easy and secure.

You can activate your new credit card with our secure Online Banking. You’ll need to have your credit card to hand; we’ll need details from the card as well as some of your personal information to complete the activation. If you’re already registered with Online Banking you’ll need your sign in details.

As part of the activation process you will be given the opportunity to choose additional services that may benefit you. You will be given the option to:

  • make a balance transfer
  • sign up for paper-free statements – online statements are available for credit cards via Online Banking, making it easier to manage your account
  • set up a Direct Debit – this can be for a fixed amount or percentage, the minimum or the full outstanding balance.

If you’re not registered with Online Banking, you’ll still have the opportunity to register once you’ve activated your credit card, so that you can take advantage of these services.

In Branch

You can choose to activate your new credit card in any Halifax branch, our branch staff are available to help you setup your new Halifax credit card.

Come and see us in any of our branches to talk to a member of the team.

Mobile Banking app

You can now activate your credit card using our Mobile Banking app.

Just look for the prompt within the notification centre on the homepage to activate your credit card.

If you’d prefer to speak to someone to activate your credit card  or would like to discuss anything else about setting up your credit card, our Telephone Banking staff are available to help.

How do I activate an additional card?

The main cardholder must activate any additional card, as the 16 digit credit card account number of the main cardholder is needed. You can activate the additional card online, by calling the number on the credit card sticker or you can pop into your local branch.

Do I need to activate my credit card before I can use it online?

Yes, for security purposes you need to activate your credit card before you can use it.

Do I need to activate my replacement card?

You will not need to activate your replacement credit card, unless the sticker on the card asks you to do so.

Can I personalise my PIN number?

You can change your PIN at most UK cash machines. Just insert your card and using the PIN we’ve sent you, follow the on-screen instructions.

Contactless Cards

To activate contactless on your credit card you just need to make a PIN transaction first.

You can apply for a credit card if:

  • You’re a UK resident, aged 18 or over, with a regular annual income.
  • You are free of County Court Judgements (CCJs), Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVAs) or bankruptcies.
  • You’re not unemployed or a student.
  • You’ve not been declined for a Halifax credit card within the last 30 days.

You’ll need to complete an eligibility check first, then we’ll show you the credit cards, interest rates and credit limit we could offer you.
