The Fortnite v39.20 Update (released today, Jan 9, 2026) is headlined by the major South Park Collaboration and the new Quints (5-player squad) mode.
Here are the patch notes for the key changes live now (or going live as servers open).

For the first time, you can play in Squads of 5.
This playlist is available until February 5, 2026.
Note: The lobby UI has been updated to accommodate the 5th player slot.

🔫 Weapons & Items
NEW Mythic: The Stick of Truth
Effect: Allows the user to manipulate the Storm (can temporarily push back the circle or summon lightning).
Location: Spawns exclusively in the new Cartmanland POI.
NEW Item: Kenny’s Respawn Token
Effect: A single-use item that functions like a Self-Revive Kit. If you are eliminated while holding it, you automatically reboot (referencing the “Oh my god, they killed Kenny” gag).
NEW Consumable: Cheesy Poofs
Effect: Restores Health rapidly.
Special Trait: You can consume these while sprinting.
Unvaulted:
Standard Assault Rifle (Adjusted fire rate).
Vaulted:
All Winterfest items (Snowball Launcher, Holiday Presents) have been removed.
🗺️ Map Changes
New POI: Cartmanland
Replaces Wonkeeland on the map.
Features rides like “Chaos Blast” and “Pi Pi’s Lazy River.”
Winterfest Removal:
Snow has melted in most non-alpine regions.
Holiday decorations and Sgt. Winter (Boss) have been removed.
🛠️ Bug Fixes & Improvements
Glider Fix: The Magnetic Steps Glider default texture bug has been resolved.
Reboot Van: Fixed an issue where some players could not interact with the Reboot Van despite having a card.
Self-Revive: Fixed a bug where the Self-Revive Device wouldn’t trigger if the player was rolling/sliding at the moment they were knocked.
Latency: Backend improvements to reduce packet loss in crowded end-game circles.
Pro Tip:
The Stick of Truth is unique (only one per match), so expect Cartmanland to be the hottest drop spot for the next few weeks.
