Fortnite Locker Error Code 0 | Failed to Compose Cosmetic Items from Locker Service

The error message “Failed to Compose Cosmetic Items from Locker Service” is a specific backend error that has been popping up for many players today, March 5, 2026, following the v39.51 update.

This error occurs when the game client cannot communicate with Epic’s “Cosmetic Service” to load your inventory, which is why your locker looks empty or resets to a default skin.

Why is this happening today?

  • Epic Online Services (EOS) Maintenance: Epic scheduled a specific backend maintenance for today between 07:00 – 10:00 UTC. Even if the game is technically “up,” the system that “composes” (assembles) your skins is still being refreshed.

  • Data Desync: Your local game thinks you have certain items equipped, but the server hasn’t “validated” your ownership yet due to the update transition.

How to Fix the “Failed to Compose” Error

Since this is a backend “handshake” issue, try these steps to force a re-sync:

  1. The “Default Shuffle” Fix:

    • Go to your Locker.

    • Equip a completely Default skin (no back bling, no wrap).

    • Enter a Creative map or a Solo match.

    • Once you load into the lobby/island, leave the match. This often forces the server to re-verify your inventory.

  2. Clear the “Web Cache” (PC Only):

    • Close Fortnite and the Epic Launcher.

    • Press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and hit Enter.

    • Navigate to EpicGamesLauncher > Saved.

    • Delete the folder named webcache.

    • Restart the launcher and the game. This forces the locker UI to re-download your cosmetic data.

  3. Check for “Conflicting” Items (Car/Jam Track):

    • There is a known bug where having certain Cars (like the Batmobile or newer collab vehicles) or Jam Tracks equipped can break the locker composition.

    • Try switching your Car and Jam Track presets to “Random” or “Default” and see if your skins reappear.

  4. Platform Power Cycle:

    • If you are on PS5 or Xbox, don’t just “Suspend” the game. Do a full Shut Down of the console and unplug the power cord for 30 seconds. This clears the temporary cache that stores your locker session.

Current Status

As of right now, Epic is still monitoring services after the maintenance. If you’ve tried the steps above and it’s still failing, the issue is on their end and will likely resolve itself within the next 1–2 hours.
