Fixed : Error In Establishing Connection with Traces Websocket Esigner

This error is a classic “handshake” failure between the Traces (Income Tax/GST) portal and the e-Signer (DSC) utility. It’s a common headache for users in India dealing with Class 3 Digital Signatures.

Since this error usually stems from a local port blockage or a Java conflict, here is the technical checklist to get it reconnected.

1. The “Whitelisting” Fix (Most Effective)

The e-Signer utility runs on a local websocket (usually port 1585, 2021, or 5510). Your browser might be blocking it because it thinks it’s an “unsecure” connection.

  • Open a new tab in your browser (Chrome/Edge).

  • Type this into the address bar and hit Enter: https://127.0.0.1:1585

  • If you see a “Your connection is not private” warning, click Advanced and then click Proceed to 127.0.0.1 (unsafe).

  • Once you see a blank page or a “success” message, refresh the Traces portal. This manually forces the browser to trust the local websocket.

2. Java Version Control

The e-Signer is very picky about Java versions.

  • The Sweet Spot: Most Indian government utilities (Traces/GST/MCA) currently work best with Java 8 Update 321 or higher (32-bit version), even if your OS is 64-bit.

  • Cleanup: Go to your Control Panel and uninstall all old versions of Java.

  • Security Tab: Open the Java Control Panel > Security tab. Add https://www.tdscpc.gov.in to the Exception Site List.

3. Restart the WebSocket Service

Sometimes the utility “freezes” even though the window is open.

  • Close your browser completely.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  • Look for any process named eSigner, java.exe, or javaw.exe. End these tasks.

  • Go to your desktop, right-click the Traces e-Signer icon, and select Run as Administrator.

  • Wait for the small “e-Signer started successfully” popup before opening your browser.

4. Browser Specific Settings

  • Chrome/Edge: Go to chrome://flags or edge://flags. Search for “Allow insecure localhost” and set it to Enabled. Restart the browser.

  • Pop-ups: Ensure pop-ups and redirects are “Allowed” for the Traces website.

5. Clear the SSL State

If the certificate handshake is stuck:

  • Open Control Panel > Internet Options.

  • Go to the Content tab.

  • Click Clear SSL State.

  • Click OK and restart your browser.

Common “Gotcha”:

If you are using a proxy or a VPN, the websocket connection to 127.0.0.1 (your own computer) will fail. Make sure your VPN is turned off while using the DSC utility.
