Fixed : An Error Occurred While Loading A Higher Quality Version Of This Video

This error means your iPhone or iPad is trying to download the original, full-resolution video from iCloud to play it, but the download is failing.

This usually happens when “Optimize iPhone Storage” is turned on and your internet connection or storage space is causing a hiccup.

Here are the fastest ways to force the video to load, ranked from easiest to most effective.

1. The “Duplicate” Trick (Fastest Fix)

This forces your phone to treat the video as a new file and immediately download a fresh copy from the cloud.

  1. Open the video in the Photos app.

  2. Tap the three dots (…) in the top-right corner.

  3. Tap Duplicate.

  4. Try to play the new copy that appears at the bottom of your library.

    • If it works, you can delete the old “broken” version.

2. The “Favorite” Toggle

This signals to iCloud that this specific file is important and should be prioritized.

  1. Tap the Heart icon (Favorite) at the bottom of the video.

  2. Wait about 30–60 seconds.

  3. Try to play the video again.

  4. (You can un-heart it afterward).

3. The “Edit” Mode Trigger

  1. Open the broken video and tap Edit in the top right.

  2. Wait for the editing tools to load (this forces the phone to fetch the video data).

  3. If it loads, tap Cancel (or “Revert”) to exit. The video should now play.

4. Check for New iCloud Terms

Sometimes Apple pauses iCloud syncing until you agree to new legal terms.

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Tap your Name/Apple ID at the top.

  3. Look for a notification or banner asking you to “Agree to New iCloud Terms and Conditions.”

5. Check Your Local Storage

If your phone is completely full, it has no room to download the high-quality temporary file required to play the video.

  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

  • Ensure you have at least 1–2 GB of free space.

Last Resort: Switch Storage Settings

If this keeps happening to many videos, you may want to stop optimizing storage (only if you have plenty of space on your phone).

  • Go to Settings > Photos.

  • Switch from “Optimize iPhone Storage” to “Download and Keep Originals”.

  • Note: This will take a long time to sync and will fill up your phone storage.
