Face ID Not Working on iPhone | Check Face ID Settings

If Face ID isn’t working on your iPhone, there are several things you can try to get it back up and running. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix it:

1. Check Face ID Settings

Make sure Face ID is set up and enabled correctly:

  • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

  • Ensure Face ID is turned on and that you have it enabled for the features you want to use (e.g., iPhone Unlock, Apple Pay, etc.).

2. Clean the Front Camera

Sometimes Face ID fails due to smudges, dirt, or oil on the TrueDepth camera (the front-facing camera).

  • Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the front camera area (where the notch is).

3. Check for Obstructions

Make sure nothing is blocking your face:

  • Face ID needs to see your face clearly, so remove things like:

    • Sunglasses

    • Hats

    • Masks (unless you’re using the feature for Masked Face ID, which works in iOS 15.4+).

  • Try to face the camera with your eyes open and well-lit.

4. Reboot Your iPhone

Sometimes a simple restart can fix minor software issues:

  1. Press and hold the power button and volume down (or up) button until the slide to power off slider appears.

  2. Slide to turn off your phone.

  3. After the phone shuts down, press and hold the power button again to turn it back on.

5. Update iOS

Ensure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

  2. If there’s an update available, tap Download and Install.

6. Reset Face ID

If none of the above works, try resetting Face ID:

  1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

  2. Tap Reset Face ID.

  3. After resetting, set up Face ID again by following the on-screen instructions.

7. Check for Software Issues

  • Glitching Apps: Sometimes certain apps or processes can interfere with Face ID. Try closing all apps (swipe up and swipe off apps) to see if Face ID works after that.

  • Try Safe Mode: Boot your phone in Safe Mode to check if an app is causing the issue.

8. Check for Hardware Issues

If none of the software fixes work, there could be a hardware issue:

  • TrueDepth Camera Malfunction: If your iPhone is damaged (e.g., dropped), the TrueDepth camera system might be broken.

  • Contact Apple Support: If you suspect hardware failure, it’s best to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for repair or diagnostic.

9. Face ID Is Disabled After Too Many Failed Attempts

If you’ve tried Face ID several times and failed, you might have reached the limit of attempts, and Face ID will be disabled temporarily.

  • Wait a few minutes and try again, or use your passcode to unlock your device in the meantime.

10. Reset All Settings (if needed)

If nothing else works, you can reset all settings on your iPhone. This won’t erase your personal data but will reset Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, etc.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

  2. Confirm and let your iPhone restart.

When to Contact Apple Support

  • Face ID never worked: If Face ID didn’t work right after setting it up, there may be an issue with the hardware.

  • After iPhone Damage: If the phone was dropped or exposed to water, Face ID could be malfunctioning due to the TrueDepth camera being damaged.

  • Hardware failure: If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps above and Face ID still doesn’t work, it’s possible you need a repair or replacement of the front camera system.
