Explore the Initial Rankings for the 2021 College Football Playoffs

Ten teams were announced for the 2021 College Football Playoff, with two SEC heavyweights in the top four spots.

The No. 1 team in the rankings is the Georgia Bulldogs (8-0). So far this season, Georgia has been a dominant team and boasts an elite defence that hasn’t allowed more than 13 points in any game.

At the SEC Championship Game, Georgia’s Bulldogs defeated Florida 34-7 to secure their place. The Bulldogs’ quarterback situation is still up in the air after Stetson Bennett’s poor performance against the Gators, but unless their defence improves, no one will be able to beat them this year.

The highest initial CFP ranking for a non-unbeaten team is No. 2 for Alabama (7-1). As a result of their Oct. 9 loss to Texas A&M, many believe the Crimson Tide will still be in contention for the CFP championship.

Michigan State is currently ranked third in the country at 8-0. This past weekend, the Spartans won their biggest game of the season, defeating Michigan thanks to a five-touchdown performance from Kenneth Walker III. This season has been a good one for the Spartans, with an undefeated Big Ten record and a solid victory over a highly ranked opponent in Michigan. With two games remaining, No. 6 Ohio State and No. 22 Penn State stand in the way of the Spartans’ season finale. They would be among the best teams in the College Football Playoff race if they went undefeated.

The Oregon Ducks, who are currently seventh in the Big 12 standings, occupy the final CFP spot. After losing to Stanford, the Ducks have one of the best wins in the country, defeating No. 6 Ohio State on Sept. 11 in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The first team on the outside looking in at No. 5 is Ohio State (7-1). There has been only one defeat for the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Conference, and it was to Oregon. Despite a recent victory over No. 22 Penn State, the Buckeyes still have games against Michigan State and Michigan remaining.
