The “Vehicle Not Found” error on the Vahan (Parivahan) website usually implies that the specific vehicle’s data has not yet synced to the central national database, or there is a formatting mismatch.
Here is a checklist to identify the cause and fix it:
1. The “New Vehicle” Delay (Most Common)
If you bought the vehicle recently (within the last 30–60 days):
The Cause: Your local RTO has registered the vehicle, but they have not “pushed” the data to the central National Register yet. This sync often takes 15–45 days depending on the state.
The Fix: You typically have to wait. While waiting, keep a copy of your Tax Invoice and Temporary Registration slip in the car; traffic police accept these as valid proof while the smart card/RC is pending.
2. Check the Format (Zero vs. Letter O)
The search system is extremely sensitive to specific characters.
The Zero/O Mix-up: Ensure you aren’t confusing the number
0with the letterO. (e.g.,KA01is correct;KAO1is wrong).Spaces: Do not include spaces. Enter the number as one continuous string (e.g.,
DL04CAB1234, notDL 04 CAB 1234).

3. The “Backlog” Issue (Old Vehicles)
If your vehicle was registered before 2010–2012:
The Cause: Many older paper records were never digitized. This is called a “Backlog” issue.
The Fix: You must visit your local RTO and file an application for “RC Backlog Entry.” You will need to show your original physical RC to get it manually added to the digital system. You cannot renew fitness or pay tax until this is done.
4. Try the SMS Method
Sometimes the website interface has glitches while the backend database is fine.
How to check: Send an SMS to 77382 99899.
Format:
VAHAN <Space> <Vehicle Number>Example:
VAHAN MH02AB1234If the SMS returns details, the issue is just a temporary website browser error.
5. Transfer Cases (NOC Issued)
If you bought a second-hand car from another state:
Once an NOC (No Objection Certificate) is issued by the original RTO, the vehicle is often “hidden” from the search to prevent fraud until it is re-registered in the new RTO. It will reappear once the new RTO generates the new RC.
