Error 15 IMSS | How to Fix It

Running into Error 15 on the IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) website—specifically through the IDSE (IMSS Desde su Empresa) portal—is a classic connection timeout or “handshake” failure.

In plain English, it means the IMSS server and your computer stopped talking to each other before the task was finished.

Why does Error 15 happen?

It is almost always caused by one of these three culprits:

  1. Java Issues: The portal relies heavily on Java, and if your version is outdated or your security settings are too high, it blocks the connection.

  2. Browser Incompatibility: IDSE is notoriously picky and usually only works reliably on Internet Explorer mode within Microsoft Edge.

  3. Server Overload: During peak times (like the 17th of the month when payments are due), the IMSS servers often “drop” connections under the heavy load.

How to Fix It

1. Use Edge in “Internet Explorer Mode”

Since the IMSS portal was built for older tech, modern browsers struggle with it.

  • Open Microsoft Edge.

  • Go to Settings > Default Browser.

  • Set “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode” to Allow.

  • Restart Edge, go to the IDSE site, right-click the tab, and select “Reload in Internet Explorer mode.”

2. Add the Site to Java’s Exception List

Even if Java is installed, it might be blocking the “applets” required to sign your documents.

  • Open the Configure Java app from your Start menu.

  • Go to the Security tab.

  • Click Edit Site List…

  • Add these two URLs exactly:

  • Click OK and restart your browser.

3. Clear Your Java Cache

If you recently updated your digital signature (e.fiel), old cached files might be causing the conflict.

  • In the Java Control Panel (under the General tab), look for Temporary Internet Files.

  • Click Settings… > Delete Files…

  • Check all boxes (Applications, Applets, Trace/Log) and click OK.

4. Check Your “Java Policy” File

Sometimes the IMSS “Java Policy” tool needs to be re-run to reset the security permissions on your Windows profile. Many users keep the “JavaPolicy.exe” file provided by IMSS on their desktop—running this as an Administrator often clears Error 15 instantly.

A Quick Sanity Check

Since it is March 17th, today is the deadline for many IMSS filings. The servers are likely extremely busy right now. If you’ve tried the steps above and it still fails, wait 15–30 minutes and try again; it might just be the server timing out because too many people are trying to log in at once.
