The latest major update for Dota 2 is Patch 7.40, which dropped earlier this week on December 16, 2025. Here are the key highlights you need to know:
1. New Hero: Largo, The Bard
The biggest addition is the new hero, Largo. He is a “Bardmonk” (and physically appears as a frog-like creature).
Role: Support / Utility.
Playstyle: Unlike traditional bards who just “sing,” Largo uses “shamanic songs” to actively buff allies.
Key Abilities:
Songs: He can switch between songs that boost ally Spirit (magic damage/mana regen) or Foot Speed (movement speed).
Tongue Lash: A disable that uses his prehensile tongue to catch enemies (similar to Batrider’s Lasso but likely a skill shot).
2. Active Event: Dota 2 x Monster Hunter
The collaboration event that started in November is still active and runs through the holidays.
Objective: You are tracking down “dangerous heroes” (bounties).
Rewards: Crafting materials to build the limited-time Hunter’s Armor Sets.
Holiday Bonus: If you log in this week, you get a free “Material Bundle” to help catch up on crafting before the event ends.

3. Frostivus 2025
While the Monster Hunter event is the main focus, Frostivus has technically started as a smaller “login” event.
Snowballs are back: You can throw snowballs at enemies in matches again.
Gift: A generic “Holiday Material Bundle” was granted to all players on Dec 16.
4. General Gameplay Changes (7.40)
Movement Speed Nerf: Global movement speed for many heroes and items (like Wind Lace and Drum of Endurance) has been slightly reduced to slow down the “zoom” meta.
Map Changes: There are minor tweaks to the Twin Gates area (moved slightly to make them harder to defend).
