donotcall.gov | How to Register Your Number

The National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov is a free service in the USA that allows you to register your phone number to limit unsolicited telemarketing calls.

How to Register Your Number

You have two options to register:

  • Online:

    • Visit the official website, donotcall.gov. You can register up to three numbers at a time and will receive a confirmation email with a link that you must click within 72 hours to finalize the registration.
  • By Phone:

    • Call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). You must call from the phone number you wish to register.

After you register, it can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop. Your registration does not expire unless you request to remove your number.

How to File a Complaint

If you receive an unwanted telemarketing call after your number has been on the registry for more than 31 days, you can file a complaint. The same website and phone number used for registration can be used for complaints.

  • Online:

  • By Phone:

    • Call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236).

What the Registry Doesn’t Stop

The registry is designed to stop calls from legitimate telemarketing companies, but it will not stop all unwanted calls. The following types of calls are typically exempt:

  • Calls from political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors.

  • Calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship (unless you have specifically requested them to stop calling you).

  • Calls from scammers who are not following the law.

You can still file a complaint for any unwanted call from a recorded message (a “robocall”), regardless of whether your number is on the registry. Reporting these calls helps the FTC and other law enforcement agencies track and take action against violators.
