If Discord voice chat isn’t working, it’s usually caused by microphone/headset issues, incorrect input/output settings, or network problems.
Here’s a full fix guide so you can get back to talking with your friends without sounding like a silent ghost.
1️⃣ Check Your Mic, Headset, and Permissions
Make sure your mic/headset is connected and not muted (physically or via a mute button).
If on Windows:
Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar → Sound settings.
Under Input, choose your correct microphone and test it.
If on Mac:
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
Ensure Discord is allowed.
2️⃣ Set the Right Devices in Discord
Open Discord → click the ⚙️ User Settings (bottom-left).
Go to Voice & Video.
Under Input Device, choose your mic.
Under Output Device, choose your headset/speakers.
Speak into your mic and check the input level bar.

3️⃣ Reset Voice Settings
Sometimes a corrupted config causes no sound.
Go to User Settings → Voice & Video → scroll down → click Reset Voice Settings → Confirm.
Re-select your mic and headset afterwards.
4️⃣ Turn Off Exclusive Mode (Windows)
Right-click the sound icon → Sound settings → More sound settings.
Under Recording tab → select your mic → Properties → Advanced tab.
Uncheck:
Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device
Give exclusive mode applications priority
Click Apply.
5️⃣ Fix Push-to-Talk or Voice Activity Issues
If using Push-to-Talk, make sure your hotkey is set and not conflicting with a game key.
If using Voice Activity, adjust the sensitivity slider so Discord detects your voice.
6️⃣ Disable QoS (Quality of Service)
In Voice & Video, scroll to Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority and turn it off — some networks block it.
7️⃣ Check Network & Firewall
Restart your router.
If you’re on a restricted network (school/work), try using a mobile hotspot or VPN to test.
Make sure Discord.exe is allowed through your firewall/antivirus.
8️⃣ Update or Reinstall Discord
Outdated clients can break voice chat.
Download the latest version from discord.com and reinstall.
💡 Pro Tip: If you’re stuck in “RTC Connecting” or “No Route,” that’s a separate network error — and I can give you the exact fix for that too.
