Diablo 4 Error Code 1016 is a General Disconnection Error. It means your game client lost its connection to the Diablo 4 servers.
While this can happen during server outages, it is usually caused by a minor instability in your home network that the game is overly sensitive to.
Here are the most effective fixes, ranked from easiest to most technical.
1. The “Magic” Fix (PC Only): Disable IPv6
This is the most successful community-found fix for Error 1016. Diablo 4 sometimes struggles with the newer IPv6 protocol.
Press Windows Key + R, type
ncpa.cpl, and hit Enter.Right-click your active network adapter (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and select Properties.
Find Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) in the list.
Uncheck the box next to it.
Click OK and restart your computer.

ipconfig /flushdnsipconfig /releaseipconfig /renew
Close the window and try the game again.
3. Power Cycle Your Equipment (All Platforms)
Don’t just restart; perform a full power cycle to clear temporary cache issues in your modem.
Shut down your PC or Console completely.
Unplug your Router and Modem from the power outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug them back in and wait for the internet lights to stabilize.
Turn your gaming device back on.
4. Change DNS Settings (All Platforms)
Switching to a public, high-speed DNS like Google or Cloudflare often resolves timeout issues.
PC: Go to Network Properties > IPv4 Properties > Set DNS to
8.8.8.8(Primary) and8.8.4.4(Secondary).PS5/Xbox: Go to Network Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings > Manual. Use

5. Niche Fix: Disable Chroma Effects (PC)
Some users report that the game’s lighting software integration causes crashes that masquerade as network disconnects.
Go to your Documents folder:
Documents\Diablo IV\Open the LocalPrefs.txt file.
Find the line that says
DisableChromaEffects "0"and change it toDisableChromaEffects "1".Save the file and launch the game.
