Crave Error 5005 (often appearing alongside Error 500) is usually a signal that your device is having trouble communicating with the Crave servers, often due to an outdated app version or unsupported hardware.
Since late 2025, Crave has updated its interface and security protocols, which has unfortunately left some older devices behind. Here is how to fix it:
Step by Step Fix
1. The “Compatibility” Check (Most Common Cause)
Crave recently dropped support for older operating systems. If you are using an older streaming stick or smart TV, this error is likely a “soft block.”
Fire TV / FireStick: You now need Fire OS 6 or higher. If you have an older 1st or 2nd generation Stick, the app will trigger 5005 because it can no longer handshake with the new servers.
Samsung / Sony / LG TVs: If your TV is more than 5-6 years old, the native app may no longer be supported.
2. The “Hard” Power Cycle
A standard “off and on” often isn’t enough because modern TVs just go into standby mode.
Unplug your TV/Device from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
While it’s unplugged, hold the physical power button on the TV for 15 seconds to drain any stored power.
Plug it back in and try the app again.
3. Force Update the App
Sometimes the app won’t auto-update, causing a version mismatch.
FireStick: Go to the app icon, press the Menu (three lines) button on your remote, and select More Info. If an update is available, it will show there.
Apple TV / Roku: Go to the App Store, search for Crave, and see if it says “Update” instead of “Open.”
4. Check for VPNs or “Private DNS”
Just like the CIBC app we discussed, Crave is very aggressive about location.
If you have a VPN or a Custom DNS (like AdGuard or a “Smart DNS” for US content) active on your router or device, Crave will throw a 5005 error to prevent what it thinks is “geo-piracy.” Disable these and try again.
5. The “Casting” Workaround
If your device is confirmed as “too old” (showing an ‘X’ in compatibility), you don’t necessarily need a new TV.
Try opening Crave on your phone or laptop and casting/AirPlaying it to the TV. This often bypasses the 5005 error because the phone handles the server communication, not the outdated TV app.
