How the Scam Works

The scam typically involves an automated or live phone call or a voicemail that says you’re eligible for a 50% discount on your monthly bill. The scammer might know some of your personal details, like your name, address, or even your last bill amount, which makes the offer seem more legitimate.

The key red flags that expose the scam are:

  • Payment Method:

    • The scammer will insist on an unusual form of payment, most commonly Target gift cards or other non-traditional methods like wire transfers, Zelle, or PayPal. Legitimate companies like Comcast will never ask for payment this way.
  • Urgency and Threats:

    • They use high-pressure tactics and create a false sense of urgency. The caller might say the offer is “expiring today,” or that if you don’t act immediately, your account will be suspended, or you’ll be charged a large fee (e.g., $1,000).
  • Requesting Personal Information:

    • Scammers may ask you to “confirm” sensitive information like your account number, Social Security number, or credit card details. A real Comcast representative will not ask for this kind of information during an unsolicited call.
