The Google Home app walks you through the steps for Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra setup.

If you’ve already set up your Chromecast on a mobile device, you don’t need to set it up again on a different mobile device if all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Chromecast setup on a computer is no longer supported. To set up your Chromecast, use a mobile device.

What you need to get started

  • A Chromecast device (3rd gen or older).
  • The latest version of the Google Home appGoogle Home app.
  • The latest version of Google app.
  • Google Account.
  • A display device with an HDMI input, for example, a high-definition television (HDTV).
  • A mobile device or tablet.
  • A compatible mobile device or tablet that must support a 5 GHz connection to set up Chromecast on a 5 GHz connection. Note: A WPA2-Enterprise network is not supported.
  • Meet the minimum Operating System (OS) requirements to run the Google Home app Google Home app.
  • An internet connection.
  • Access to a secure wireless network. Make sure you have the wireless network password handy.
  • Availability and performance of certain features, services and applications are device- and network-dependent, and might not be available in all areas. Subscription(s) may be required, and additional terms, conditions and/or charges may apply.

Set up Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra

  1. Plug in your Chromecast.
  2. Download the Google Home app on your Chromecast-supported Android device.
  3. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  4. Follow the steps.
    1. If you don’t find the steps to set up your Chromecast:
      1. At the top left of the Google Home app home screen, tap Add   Set up device  New device.
      2. Follow the remaining steps.
  5. Setup is successful. You’re all done!

Troubleshoot setup

If setup didn’t work, try the following steps:

  1. Reboot your Chromecast.
  2. Unplug your router, then plug it back in.
  3. Connect manually to your Chromecast’s service set identifier (SSID).
    1. Open your phone’s Settings app and then tap Wi-Fi and then connect to the Chromecast SSID.
    2. Open the Google Home app and try to set up your device again.
  4. Factory reset your Chromecast.
  5. Contact support.

Set up your Chromecast with Google TV and Voice Remote

Your Chromecast and the Google Home app walk you through the steps to set up your Chromecast with Google TV and Voice Remote.

What you need to get started

  • A Chromecast with Google TV and Chromecast Voice Remote.
  • A display device with an HDMI input, such as a high-definition television (HDTV).
  • A mobile phone or tablet (recommended but optional).
    • The phone or tablet must meet the minimum Operating System (OS) requirements to run the Google Home app Google Home app.
    • It must have the latest version of the Google Home app Google Home app on Android or iOS.
    • It also must support a 5 GHz connection to set up Chromecast on a 5 GHz connection. Note: A WPA2-Enterprise network is not supported.
  • Google Account.
    • Note: For best results, use a Gmail account.
  • A secure internet connection.
    • If you use a wireless network, make sure you have the wireless network password handy.
    • You can also use an Ethernet connection.

Set up your Chromecast and Voice Remote

Start with the TV and Chromecast remote

Note: Use the directional pad (D-pad) on the remote to navigate and select.

  1. Power on your TV.
  2. Plug your Chromecast into an available HDMI input on your TV or other display device.
  3. Plug one end of the power adapter cable into your Chromecast and the other end into an open outlet.
    • You can also connect your Chromecast to an Ethernet network.
  4. Plug your Chromecast into an available HDMI input on your TV or other display device.
  5. Switch your TV to the HDMI input your Chromecast is plugged into, then wait for the remote to pair.
    • In most cases, the remote pairs automatically. However, if the TV screen shows “Start pairing,” press and hold the “Back” and “Home” buttons on the remote until the light on the remote starts to pulse.
  6. Select the language you want to use.

Continue with your phone

  1. When the TV screen shows instructions to set up with the Google Home app, open the Home app Google Home app on your phone.
    • If you’ve never used the Home app before, tap Get started  the Google Account you want to use with Chromecast  Ok  the home you want to use  Next.
    • If you don’t have your phone handy, you can choose to complete the setup with the Voice Remote. Select Set up on TV instead and follow the instructions there.
  2. If prompted, allow the Google Home app to find and connect to devices on your local network. If you don’t get a prompt:
    1. Open your iPhone or iPad’s “Settings” app.
    2. Tap Bluetooth  turn on Bluetooth.
    3. Go back to the “Settings” main page.
    4. Tap Privacy  Local Network  turn on Google Home app.
    5. Go back to the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap Set up Chromecast  the home you want to use  Next  wait for the app to find your Chromecast.
    • If you can’t find “Set up Chromecast,” in the top left corner, tap Add   Set up device plus  New device  the home you want to use  Next.
  4.  Give the Home app permission to use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code on the TV screen  scan the QR code  wait for your Chromecast to connect.
    • You can enter the setup code manually in the Home app instead of scanning the QR code.
  5. The Home app should take you through a series of setup steps that includes things like accepting the Terms of Service and choosing your preferred settings.
  6. When the screen shows “Set up here is finished,” continue setup with the TV and remote.

Set up the Chromecast remote 

You can set up your remote to control your TV, receiver or soundbar.

Note: In some cases, your remote is automatically configured, and the TV screen will show “Your Chromecast remote is set up.” If your remote is set up automatically, continue to Finish setup with the TV and remote.

  1. If your remote is not set up automatically, the TV screen might show “Control volume and power with your Chromecast remote.” In this case, select Set up remote.
    • If you want to skip setting up your remote, select Not now. You can set it up later in settings.
  2. If you want to configure the volume button, select the device you use to play sound  the brand of your device.
  3. When the screen shows “You’ll hear music next,” make sure your sound device’s volume is on  select Next to get the music.
  4. When the music plays, point your Chromecast remote at the device and toggle the volume up and down.
  5. Under “Do the volume buttons work?” select Yes or No, try again.
    • You must point your remote at the device for the volume buttons to work.
    • For some models, the remote can’t control volume on your device.
  6. If you want to configure the power button, press the power button on the remote to turn off the TV  wait 8 seconds  turn the TV back on.
  7. Under “Did your TV turn off and on again?” select Yes or No, try again.
  8. If you want to configure the input button, on your remote, press the input button  switch through all your TV inputs.
    1. If the input button works, make sure to switch back to the HDMI port your Chromecast is connected to.
  9. Under “Did the input button work?” select Yes or No, try again.
    • Note: For some models, the remote can’t control input on your TV.
  10. The screen should show “Chromecast remote is ready.”

Finish setup with the TV and remote

  1. Wait for the TV to install the apps you selected on your mobile device.
  2. The TV screen should show “Welcome. Your Chromecast with Google TV is ready!” To navigate to the Home screen, select Start exploring.
