Bangladesh NID Application System

Eligible citizens who are at least 16 years old can apply for a new NID online through the designated web portal.

ℹ️ What is the NID in Bangladesh

The NID (National Identity Card) is a smart biometric identity card issued by the Election Commission of Bangladesh (via the NID Wing). It serves as a proof of identity, eligibility to vote, etc.
It’s tied to the electoral roll / voter registration system. One NID per citizen.

Citizens of Bangladesh.
Must be at least 18 years old to register as a voter (and hence to get the full NID as a voter’s ID).
Must have valid documents for proof of identity, birth, parentage etc.

Here are the common documents needed:

Document	Purpose
17‑digit Bangladesh Birth Registration Certificate	Proof of birth and identity. Names/dates must match with other documents.
Valid Bangladeshi Passport	As identity proof.
Parent(s)’ NID (or death certificate if parent is deceased)	For parental identity verification.
SSC / equivalent or other academic certificate (if available)	For additional identity / age proof.
Utility bill, house rent receipt, holding tax receipt, or other proof of address	To verify permanent address.
Citizenship certificate, spouse’s NID or marriage certificate (if applicable)	For marital status identity or spouse link.
For certain districts (Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban) a Special Information Form is also required.

Here’s how the process usually goes:

Online Application
- Visit the official portal: services.nidw.gov.bd for new NID application.
- Complete Form‑2 (KA) for new citizen / voter registration.
Print & Gather Documents
- After filling online, print the filled application. Attach required documents.
Appointment / Biometrics / Physical Appearance
- Most applicants need to physically appear at the nearest Upazila/Thana Election Office or a Bangladesh consulate or mission (if abroad).
- Biometric enrolment: photo, signature, fingerprints, iris/eye scan.
Verification by Election Authorities
- The documents/data you submit are verified by the Upazila Election Office or corresponding local authority.
- This may take time depending on backlog and clarity of documents.
Issuance / Collection / Digital Copy
- After approval, you get a voter registration slip (often after biometrics). Keep this safely.
- You may receive notifications (SMS / email) once the Smart NID card is ready
- A digital copy of the NID may also be downloadable from the portal in some cases.
For Overseas Applicants / Through Consulates
- If you’re abroad, there are specific procedures: online form fill, document upload, appointment at a embassy or consulate for biometrics & card collection.

If your NID is lost or damaged, you may apply for a duplicate NID.
If there is some incorrect information (name, date, etc.), you can apply for correction with supporting documents.

Here are things people commonly face or must watch out for:

Mismatch of names/dates across documents (passport, birth certificate, other identity docs). These cause rejection or delays.
Missing required proofs of permanent address.
Not filling the “Special Information Form” if you’re from certain districts.
Physical appearance requirement: you must appear in person for biometrics.
Delay in verification by local election office.
Losing the voter registration slip — it’s important.
