If you are likely experiencing a “Connection Timed Out” or syncing failure rather than a total outage, the server is temporarily overloaded. Do not uninstall the app (you will lose data). Just wait 1 hour and try again.
Here is how to fix the specific error you are likely seeing:
1. If you are getting “Connection Timed Out” / Network Errors
Many users have reported sync failures since Jan 1st. This is usually a “routing” issue where your specific internet provider is struggling to reach Anki’s servers.
The Fix: Switch your internet source.
If you are on Wi-Fi, turn it off and use Cellular Data (hotspot) to sync.
This successfully bypasses the error for most users right now.
2. If you are getting a “502 Bad Gateway”
This is a server-side error.
AnkiHub Users: If you use the AnkiHub add-on (common for medical students/AnKing decks), their servers have been intermittent this week. You may need to disable the add-on temporarily to sync your main collection.
AnkiWeb Users: If the main AnkiWeb site is giving this error, the server is temporarily overloaded. Do not uninstall the app (you will lose data). Just wait 1 hour and try again.

3. If you are getting “Database Locked” or Generic Errors
Your local file might be slightly corrupted.
Open Anki on Desktop.
Go to Tools $\rightarrow$ Check Database.
After it finishes, try syncing again.
Standard Warning:
If the app asks you to “Upload to AnkiWeb” or “Download from AnkiWeb,” always choose the device that has your most recent progress to avoid overwriting your cards.
