If you are seeing the message “An update is required to continue” today, Thursday, March 5, 2026, it is because Epic Games has just released the v39.51 patch.
You cannot play until this update is installed. Here is everything you need to know to get back into the game:
1. Download the Update (v39.51)
Depending on your platform, you may need to manually trigger the download:
PS5: Highlight Fortnite on the home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
Xbox: Go to My Games & Apps > Manage > Updates.
PC (Epic Games Launcher): The launcher should start the update automatically. If not, click the three dots (…) next to Fortnite in your Library and select Manage > Verify.
Nintendo Switch: Press the + button on the Fortnite icon and select Software Update > Via the Internet.
2. Server Maintenance Status
Even after downloading the patch, you might still see an error if the servers are in “Downtime.”
Current Status: Maintenance began at 9:00 AM UTC (2:30 PM IST).
Expected End Time: Servers are expected to be fully back online by 11:00 AM UTC (4:30 PM IST).
Update Size: This is a mid-season patch, so expect a download size of roughly 2GB – 5GB depending on your platform.

3. Troubleshooting “Update Required” Loops
If you have already downloaded the update but still see the message:
Restart your Device: Sometimes the game client needs a fresh reboot to recognize that the files have been updated.
Check Disk Space: If your storage is almost full, the update might “finish” but fail to apply correctly. Ensure you have at least 10GB of free space.
Time & Date Sync: Make sure your console/PC time is set to “Set Automatically.” If your clock is out of sync with Epic’s servers, it will keep telling you an update is required.
What’s in this update?
This is the final content drop before Chapter 7 Season 2 (launching March 16). Today’s patch includes:
Rick and Morty Crossover: New skins and potentially map items.
OG Classics: Several classic weapons are being unvaulted.
Season 2 Build-up: New map teasers involving the “Giant Orb.”
